Joe Biden’s nasty fight against Barack Obama

Former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden acted like the best of friends every time the cameras came on, day in and day out, for 16 years. But now, the two men can’t control how they really feel about each other—and they recently had a nasty fight inside one of the nation’s fanciest restaurants.

Both former presidents dined out at the same Washington bistro recently, but neither one would give the other the time of day.

Obama and Biden crossed paths in October at Georgetown’s ritzy Cafe Milano (remember that name; we’ll come back to it)—so close to each other that their security details practically rubbed elbows—but they didn’t say a single word to each other all night, ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl told Katie Couric.

“It’s not a good relationship. If they had wanted to see each other, they absolutely would have,” Karl told Couric’s podcast. “Biden and the people around him very much blame Barack Obama for the effort to push Biden out of the campaign.”

Despite their buddy-buddy act, the two worst presidents of modern times have had a rocky relationship for a long time.

Karl said he “was astounded” to learn that, when Biden finally dropped out of the race and threw his support behind Kamala Harris, “the one person he did not call was Barack Obama [who] made it possible for him to be president by making him vice president.”

And when Obama called him, Biden “didn’t take the call,” Karl told Couric.

“The two of them did not speak for weeks.”

In fact, Biden had rejected at least two dozen calls from Obama in the two weeks between Biden’s terrible debate performance in June and his decision to end his reelection campaign last July.

Biden kept on sending Obama to voicemail for a month afterwards, according to Karl’s book, Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America.

As it turns out, the Obama-Biden “bromance” never really existed except when they tried to fool voters.

After all, why should it? Obama didn’t choose Biden because he liked him: He picked Biden to camouflage his own radical plans for America.

“Biden never went up once to the White House residence,” said Gabriel Debenedetti, author of The Long Alliance: The Imperfect Union of Joe Biden and Barack Obama, in a Time magazine interview. “You can count on one hand how many times they golfed together.”

The moment that changed everything came in 2016, when Biden realized Obama would support Hillary Clinton and undermine the veep’s lifelong dream of becoming president.

“Biden also felt that Obama was being a bit dismissive of him politically by essentially backing Hillary Clinton behind the scenes, sending people to work for her, having a lot of his aides talk to her, praising her publicly all while his Vice President was sitting right there,” Debenedetti told Time.

When Biden told Obama he planned to run for president in 2020, his old boss tried to let the wind out of his sails: “You don’t have to do this, Joe, you really don’t.”

Obama kept hammering his “close friend” during the 2020 primaries. When a Democrat thought Biden seemed electable, Obama said, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f**k things up.”

When Biden proved him wrong and narrowly beat Donald Trump, Obama returned to the White House and completely ignored Biden—even when the president of the United States tried to get his attention and grabbed his shoulder.

Watch Obama’s facial expressions.

Then Obama started an all-out campaign to force Biden to step out of office—possibly to make way for Michelle Obama.

As The Horn revealed, a whole year before the election, Obama insider David Axelrod tweeted that Joe Biden “needs to decide” whether running for reelection “is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s.” (His emphasis.)

If that weren’t clear enough, as The Horn reported, former first lady Michelle Obama called out Biden.

Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it's in HIS best interest or the country's?

“I am terrified about what could possibly happen” in the 2024 election, Mrs. Obama told Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast last January, 11 months before the election. “The tone and tenor of the message matters. We can’t just say what the first thing that comes to our minds.”

Not long after, insiders said Barack personally “read Joe the riot act”—another story The Horn brought you.

Obama then pressured Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to force Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race—because, The New York Times reported, Obama “had a fragile relationship with his former vice president, who still carried a chip on his shoulder over Mr. Obama’s decision to support Hillary Clinton’s candidacy in 2016. Having urged him not to run back then, Mr. Obama told Mr. Schumer, he wasn’t sure if he was the best messenger.”

Then, last October, Biden and Obama got into a heated discussion at Ethel Kennedy’s funeral over Biden’s replacement at the top of the Democratic ticket, Kamala Harris.

“She’s not as strong as me,” Biden told Obama.

“I know…that’s true…We have time,” said Obama, according to an expert lip reader.

But then, if Biden has his reasons to carry a grudge against the 44th president, Obama has his reasons to hate Biden, too.

Obama never forgot the way Joe Biden, the lion of the Senate, insulted him as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean.”

But Obama picked Biden as his running mate anyway, putting the washed-up senator on a ticket that was sure to win.

As vice president, Biden regularly blew interviews, leading one Obama aide to scream in frustration, “We can’t trust (Biden) to say his lines.”

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man.”

Still, Obama let Biden and his family pile up a fortune in accepting foreign donations (through his son’s business deals) and let Biden run the foreign policy desk fore the countries Biden wanted his son, Hunter, to shake down.

Oh… and if the Cafe Milano sounds familiar, it should.

Then-Vice President Biden had dinner in the restaurant’s garden room with Burisma oil executive Vadym Pozharskyi, Russian billionaire Yelena Baturina and her husband, Yury Luzhkov, who was mayor of Moscow at the time. All of them sent millions of dollars to the Biden family’s businesses via Hunter Biden, who arranged the April 2015 meeting, as The Horn reported four-and-a-half years ago.

By wiping out every other major Democrat in two historically bad midterm elections, Obama accidentally made Biden a presidential contender, despite the Delaware senator’s two failed runs over 32 years.

Obama got elected twice—and he thought he set the Democrats up for a fourth term: When Biden got elected, Obama made the dementia-ridden Biden his “stand-in, a front man.” Obama called all the shots through intermediaries burrowed deep in Biden’s White House.

Then, Obama had to watch as Biden acted like such an unlikable curmudgeon that he drove off his country and lost the election to Donald Trump.

In Obama’s view, he was trying to save the country from Donald Trump, and Biden ruined it all.

No matter how you look at it, said Couric, the Obama-Biden relationship seems “so dysfunctional.”

That’s how most Americans see the country during their three terms in office.

America would be better off if neither man ever spoke again.
