They started off friendly on the campaign trail. But heading into tonight’s debate, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and billionaire Donald Trump find themselves on a crash course for a showdown.
Should Cruz maintain his composure, he could emerge as the night’s big winner.
If Cruz can’t handle the spotlight, Trump won’t have a serious opponent in Iowa.
Cruz enters Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate with a burst of momentum in Iowa polls, some of which show him leading Trump. But he also has a target on his back.
It’s a shift for Cruz, whose campaign got off to a low-key start. Now, he’s challenging Trump in Iowa and casting himself as a more electable alternative who still shares the bombastic billionaire’s anti-Washington appeal.
Signs of a split between the two have emerged in recent days, with Cruz appearing to question Trump’s judgment at a private fundraiser, according to audio obtained by The New York Times, and Trump calling Cruz “a little bit of a maniac.”
“Looks like @tedcruz is getting ready to attack,” Trump wrote on Twitter last week. “I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!”
Trump said the primetime faceoff could turn messy.
“I am giving them a chance for them to making total fools of themselves in front of millions of people,” Trump said, adding that he’s expecting to be attacked. “This will not be like an evening in paradise for me. Do we agree?” he asked.
Another intriguing dynamic in Tuesday’s prime-time debate in Las Vegas involves Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, another first-term senator and Cuban-American.
Cruz and Rubio have been sparring from afar for weeks, particularly over national security, which is now a top campaign issue following the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California. Rubio has tried to brand Cruz as an isolationist and has criticized his support for ending the bulk collection of Americans’ phone records, saying it weakens the government’s ability to identify potential terrorists.
“There are some differences in policy,” Rubio said of Cruz in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. “I think we need to be the national security party, the party of strong national security, committed to ensuring we have the strongest military force in the world.”
More broadly, Rubio’s campaign is eager to cast Cruz, who prides himself on being a conservative “truth-teller,” as a politically expedient flip-flopper who is willing to say whatever is necessary to win an election. Rubio’s campaign has raised questions about the consistency of Cruz’s positions on sending troops to the Middle East, as well as what they consider ambiguous answers he gives on whether he would allow immigrants living in the U.S. illegally to stay here.
Tuesday’s debate will be the first for Republicans in more than a month, and also the first since the attacks in France and California. The four previous GOP debates had record viewership, giving the candidates an unparalleled platform to reach voters.
With just six weeks until voting begins, the broad contours of the race remain consistent. Trump still sits atop the GOP field, displaying a talent for connecting with voters frustrated with Washington and on edge about the threat of terrorism. He continues to make controversial comments that might disqualify more traditional candidates, including his recent call for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S.
More experienced politicians are still struggling to break through in the crowded field. Some party leaders fear that unless the GOP establishment wing quickly rallies around one candidate, the nomination could go to Trump or Cruz — candidates they see as all but unelectable in a contest with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
Still, there have been some signs of movement in early voting states since Republicans last took the debate stage.
Cruz’s rise in Iowa has been accompanied by a precipitous decline for Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who has struggled with inexperience on national security matters. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is enjoying increasing support in New Hampshire, which helped him regain his spot on the main debate stage after being downgraded in November.
“I’ve been making executive decisions for 13 years and been held accountable for them,” Christie said in an interview with The Associated Press. “There’s no other way to get ready for the presidency than that; you have to have executive experience to be successful.”
Also on the main stage Tuesday night will be Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former business executive Carly Fiorina, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul. Four lower-polling candidates will appear at an earlier event: former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, former New York Gov. George Pataki and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.
For struggling candidates, the debates will be one of their last opportunities to change the trajectory of their campaigns before voting begins in Iowa Feb. 1. The stakes are particularly high for Bush, who was once seen as a front-runner for the Republican nomination and has raised more money than any other candidate.
Bush has scoffed at suggestions that he should drop out of the race before voting begins. But that idea is likely to build if he delivers another lackluster debate performance.

Ted Cruz was attacked in Texas by that other candidate who claimed Cruz had been cuddling with a foreign outfit he’s handling as a lawyer?? that is more against established norm for lawyers and member to be of congress,,, just stating this as remembering frequent tv broadcasts when he was still campaigning to be a congressional representative from Texas. Not sure the validity of those claim on tv of that other candidate! Can be true though

William Simoni says
I was a supporter of Cruz but I had to change my mind. I Got a email from Cruz that said if I would donate 25 50 75 150 500 dollars he has big money men that will double the amount. Well that just turned me off I’m sick and tired of bought candidates when we hear of big backers they do not give because they have Big hearts it mean when you become president sign in law what ever that will fill my pocket. Look at what we have now that deep pockets gave us so I started shopping I emailed Rubio Carson Trump asked how the are financing there campaign well no response from Rubio, received a email from Carson and Trump Carson’s email stated that his funding comes from small individuals from all the states Trumps email said he is footing his own campaign. So that told me after emailing Cruz twice and Rubio once and no response they can care less for the people. So I’m for the candidate the will put people first and big government last and for sure not a candidate that need big money to win — William S
SJ Jolly says
Doubling the amount of donations is a classical fund solicitation scam. Someone donates $100,000 or so outright, and the fund solicitation people have him make it a matching donation instead. The big donator still only donates $100,000.
Pam Ela says
Ditto on the Cruz emails doubling his donations. Big red flag there. Just another bought and paid for politician. This country needs someone ‘other’ than a career politician. We need a strong and smart business minded person who can actually run a country and not be bought off. Trump 2016!

ANY ONE of the GOP candidates is light years preferable to that psychotic liar Hillary…who should be in Jail.
I like Trump, Cruz, Rubio…Huckabee, Christie, Fiorina. Carson…
I just wish they’d stop attacking each other and all just attack Hillary and Obama. One of them will be the GOP candidate in the General election…so why provide ammunition to the Dems? Present your policies and defend them vs. other policies but quit the personal attacks.
While I love Trump’s bombast I feel Cruz or Rubio would be more electable. Maybe Trump should be Secretary of State…battling foreign pinheads….as long as he doesn’t try to usurp the President!
Carson would be a great VP . Or Fiorina…maybe better.
“It’s Time to Have A Woman in the White House”…Hillary Clinton
“Been There…Done That”…Bill Clinton
Despite Trump…I think Fiorina is a Hottie…classy looks AND brains! I’d love to have an affair with her.
Hillary should wear a Burqa.

Nancy Battaglia says
I think a Trump/Paul combination would be good. Trump can be his usual bombastic self and Rand Paul
is a cool, level headed person. They would balance each other out and Rand Paul has some good ideas. He said
there are about 37 countries with terrorists organizations which could be a threat. So instead of limiting all
Muslims, he would halt people from those countries from entering. So it would be their nationality, not their
religion, which would keep them out of the U.S. Former Pres. Carter did that with iran when he was President.
Also, why have the Somais who came to Minnesota staying to themselves out in a rural area where they are under the radar instead of assimilating in our culture? A resident of Minnesota said it is believed a number of their young men have traveled to Iraq and Syria to join ISIS. They would have American passports. And when I was in the Mall of America and saw dozens of women wearing long black robes covering their heads and bodies. This is America. Dress and act like Americans ad become one of us. We should not start becoming a nation of separate groups with their own language and culture. That only weakens our country.
rBen2 says
yeah, that lady Fiorina, a past lady CEO at HP has brains and say good positive things and will be good vice president to start with, if not chosen as GOP candidate for president. Trump and Fiorina the best challenge to erring mrs.Clinton & whoever her viceP. will be. (carry the women’s vote as well as that anti PC (politically correct) trend in national politics who those candidates can not say the not “PC” stuff and make them not say any thing the public should not hear…in short lots of ‘white lies’, just to be politically correct !
Kathy Diamond says
Fiorina ran Hewlett Packard & got fired. I do not believe she has anything near what it takes to be President.
Rubio & Cruz, well, truth be told our country is in a huge mess & both of them are part of the existing problem, they are both Senators who actually get nothing done. No President material.
Christi can’t even run his own state which is a lot smaller then the U.S.A. No Presidential Material.
Carson, Is a good man, smart, thinks a lot like Trump and not afraid to stand up to the establishment, I think he would make a great VP
Trump Well we all know he is a fighter, ” not anything like what we have”
Not Politically Correct, ” Always says what he means regardless of what anyone thinks.
Knows what the important areas are to Protect America and Americans .
Takes no prisoners, Sticks to his believe’s , Doesn’t Bull S#it the People, eager to straighten out the mess OUR COUNTRY is in. YES, Presidential Material

Cruz gets nothing done because he is only one person! Everyone is so upset with Congress because they won’t stand up to Obama, well that is exactly what Cruz has done on several occasions, he doesn’t go along with the status quo, that’s why I like him! Plus he is the most intelligent person running, strickly believes in following the constitution, and is a definite fighter and excellent debater! I hate how most other candidates are attacking each other, giving the dems more ammunition for the general election! They all need to concentrate on themselves, telling us what they are for and concentrate on attacking Hillary and Obama, that’s what the people need to be informed about and reminded of!

I stand with Cruz he’s not own by anybody he is not a yes man like the rest Where he get most of his money for from people like us. He is not own by Chamber of Commerce or big business.
Kathy Diamond says
Josebear, He is owned, he has some BIG INVESTORS running his campaign, plus, he is a sitting Senator, aka: part of the existing establishment which equals part of the existing problems our country has
Carol Strom says
I agree…Cruz is being bought by big business. These candidates that take money from interest groups are putting themselves into debt to these people. They will be called upon to repay that “debt” with favors, if elected. Big business does NOT spend big bucks without hoping their candidate will win and, in return, they get what they want. Read about Monsanto and how they are poisoning the world. They called in the markers the politicians owed them and they continue to poison us all. The common person will be put on the back burner to oblige these big businesses. No one will own Trump, because not one dollar will he owe to these people for funding his campaign. Trump will owe not one favor to anyone. I want to have a great nation to leave to your and my grandchildren so they can live in peace, not the chaos we have now. TRUMP 2016!!
Lois Wenk says
I could support Cruz. But Carson is a better candidate. A Carson – Cruz team would be nice.
Justin W says
A lot of what is said tonight will be forgotten by time New Year’s Day rolls around.
The 2016 presidential election may be another one that is decided by an October surprise. A late summer/early fall terrorist attack could sink the Clinton campaign since it would reflect on the Obama administration and Hillary’s many failures as secretary of state.
Kathy Diamond says
Justin, Hillary has blood on her hands.
Barbara says
The Clinton’s will never get in trouble. They slime out of everything. Plus no matter what she does or says doesn’t matter to the Democrats. They love her. They hear nothing, they see nothing, they believe she is perfect, they believe that she is totally honest.
They can’t wait to have Bill as first man. Many will vote for Hilary because they love Bill.
Dr. Thomas E. Davis, Colonel, USA (Ret) says
Donald Trump is, by far. the only VIABLE candidate among the declared males; he takes a logical stand on an issue, justifies it and then stands by it. His point on Muslims is powerful, reasonable, desirable and absolutely necessary for our republic. ISIS/ISIL is. but a reincarnation of the Barbary Pirates of Jefferson’s time only more barbaric. Apparently no more females, Nikki Haley, Pamela Jo Bondi or Mary Fallen have any notion of entering the fray which is too bad, All three of the young Senators lack polish and intestinal fortitude, I have challenged both Cruz and Rubio to take legal action to depose the cockalorum in the Oval Office; not even a response. They simply ignore the presence of a traitor among them rather than charge him with the treason of which he is obviously guilty. Mr. Trump, could use that as his ‘Ace in the Hole’ to become the runaway “Savior of America.” Obama’s gift of 20 F-16 Fighter Jets, 200 Abrams Tanks and One Million bucks in ADDITIONAL aid to the Muslim Brotherhood is a flagrant act of TREASON consistent with Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution and Soetoro-Obama must be held to account for TREASON. I am convinced that Director Comey of the FBI is a thoroughly honorable man as is Director Casey of the Secret Service and both are duty bound to answer any indictment of Obama for treason. There is NO reason for Soetoro-Obama to still hold office when he is, without question a Felon holding office as the faux president of the USA! Dr. Thomas E, Davis, Colonel, USA (Ret)

Carol Strom says
It’s not the fact they aren’t smart enough…they don’t have the commitment to begin the impeachment or treason charges against Obama. They are part of the problem. Someone has to be accountable for arming and supporting ISIS/ISIL. Obama should be held accountable when (not IF) the next slaughter of innocent Americans occurs. If our weak Congress won’t do the job, I’m sure God will. TRUMP 2016!!!!

I don’t believe a word that comes out of Trump’s mouth. He’s got you all suckered. He’d flipped on every single issue. He only says what we want to hear. Folks, I have an honest question that needs answered…I’m trying desperately to figure out what the appeal is for the Donald as president. All I can see is a bunch of people who really don’t understand how the government works, and are caught up in emotionalism and the celebrity hype of Donald Trump, who seriously lacks substance in what he’s saying.
Understand: I have tried to like him, honest. I have watched *all* of the debates, and have heard some of his speeches. I like the fact that he’s self-funded, for obvious reasons. I like that he can negotiate deals…in the business world. I appreciate that he wants to see America prosperous again.
However, understand that the government isn’t business. I’ve worked in the government. I know how they think. I know about already-held, long-term planning already in place. The Donald will be up against long-held relationships and deals that he knows nothing about. He will have to work with Congress and the Senate, neither of which likes the guy…at all. He will have a tough time getting *anything* done with them, negotiations or no. Many of his ideas he’s floating are not even feasible, given the way government works. If he tries to cut anything, I guarantee that he will be up against the big league in house and senate, and like all the others, he will get *nothing* done.
Its as if Americans think that the president is actually a king and just say it and make it so. The position of president is all they seem to care about, when the true movers and shakers are the house and senate, folks. And the judicial system…which seriously needs work. If you really care about change, you need to limit terms and get rid of a *LOT* of deadwood in all the houses where the old-boy network rules and reigns…the president is secondary, folks.
Okay, I’m done…

Trump will also win a large portion of minority votes, the Black vote for him is growing by leaps and bounds, regardless of the media’s (Dem.)narrative, American minorities are just like any other American. I see it everywhere I go, even when I go to the barbershop, when I warned people against BO in 08 and 12, they did not see, but now, all, including Dems., Inds. and just plain ole former whatevers are voting for Trump, why? They see Trump as success, pro American and someone who is not bought, and that’s enough. All the stuff Liberals talk about has no bearing in the Black community for normal people, most people do not care about race, normal people care about money and they understand how the media slant everything and show fools like BLM as relevant, not! Dems. previous attemps to keep Blacks living in the past is over.
Kathy Diamond says
Tom Day, I think Trump will get a large amount of the black vote. Obama bull shitted them for votes, he, outright lied to them promising all the free stuff. They were deceived horribly and NOW is the only time they can let him know how they feel
Tom Day says
Kathy, You’re right, Blacks and other minorities see the damage the Dems. bought to this country and their community in particular, they understand being used as a voting block for political gain by the Dems. What it’s taking is educating that community about when and how Dems. hijacked their vote during LBJ’s term and that before LBJ, Blacks were Republicans as a block. A young Black person right out of college came to my home selling magazine subscriptions, he said something profound to me when I asked him was he voting next year, he said we all made the mistake of voting for BO and the Dems., and it will not happen the next time. He said this was the only job he could get right now and that he will vote for the person able to fix the economy, and protect us as a nation, and in his mind that was Trump.
Lois Wenk says
Carson. Cruz and Rubio have treated blacks better. He is racist and arrogant watch his behavior. Do not be brain washed.
Tom Day says
Donald Trump does not care about one’s race, one of his biggest contractor’s for 30 years is a Black company, his Trump Towers primary contractor is a woman, many of his contractors are Hispanic, Trump cares only that one is honest, love America and want to improve. I’m amazed when people say American men do not care about women, every thing an American man does in life is to keep the woman he has, get the woman he’s trying to get, or smash the woman he desires….lol, so women you always have the upper hand.

He’s a good man Lois, but what we need is a President who is not beholden to no one but the American people, the flaw of career politicians is that they want to get rich, Ben Carson is not one of those guys, but should be in the administration of Trump, but not as our CEO. If I was Trump, I would hire all these people.

the flaw of career politicians is that they want to get rich,

Yes we all do, but being a politician is being a “Public Servant”, your business should be the public’s business, not your own. “One thing I’ve learned about the press is that they’re always hungry for a good story, and the more sensational the better. …The point is that if you are a little different, or a little outrageous, or if you do things that are bold or controversial, the press is going to write about you. …The result is that the press has always wanted to write about me. …I’m not saying that they necessarily like me. Sometimes they write positively, and sometimes they write negatively. But from a pure business point of view, the benefits of being written about have far outweighed the drawbacks.” – Trump, Art of the Deal

Cruz is it for me. Love the Don for his willingness to bring up the issues in a flamboiant, articulate, untamed way. He is no match for the Ted Cruz presidential power house. I am all Cruz all the way!

Trump 2016 everybody else is a puppet, they are bought off wise up people. Cruz and Rubio will only bring more illegals here.
Jay Bell says
Kathy Walker: “Cruz and Rubio will only bring more illegals here.” Nah–those who come from families who immigrated legally, get really annoyed with those who jump the process. But, it is the Democrats who have created the mess–not those in Congress who are forced to try to deal with it.

Yes, Trump will lead us all into war.

Sometimes one has to fight to protect themselves, they started this war and we will finish it, if we have the will and right leadership. Islam has done this thruout history when they see that leadership in the world. They did it when they conquered Spain until Charles Martel threw them out, then the middle east, until King Richard the lion Heart threw out, then the high seas until Thomas Jefferson helped put a stop to them, Now its our time, until a great American leader like Trump put them down, its always been this way with Islam…….. they are a conquering religion, if you call that type of evil religion. So, we have no choice but to fight, the one mistake they are making now is that Americans are fighters too………for Liberty, and will not be conquered.

…………sadly ……..
…………not one person in all of the comments has even said the truth with respect to eligibility of Rubio, and Cruz…….neither are NBC. That is primarily why Barry Soetoro is now the illegal POTUS, he was a citizen of Indonesia, and legally adopted by Lolo Soetoro. He was never naturalized either. Just to have his alleged birth surname legally re instated he would have had to file for a legal Petition for name change at one of the Superior Courts in America. There is NO RECORD of this having ever been adjudicated……..ANYWHERE!

That poor leadership of the Democrats (Obama-H. Clinton)
