ESPN fired star during his show’s commercial break

ESPN fired NFL analyst Ryan Clark while he was in the middle of a show, on the air.

The longtime NFL Live analyst was in the middle of taping Monday’s edition of the show when ESPN informed him of his firing during a commercial break, according to The Athletic.

Clark did not return after the commercial break.

The unusual firing was ESPN’s attempt to get ahead of a leak, sources told the Athletic. Questions about Clark’s departure had already circulated, and the network feared the news would get out before they could formally tell him.

Sources at ESPN said Clark’s job had been in jeopardy since the Super Bowl in February.

Clark, a former Pittsburgh Steelers safety and Pro Bowler, joined ESPN in 2015 and had spent more than a decade as one of the central figures on the popular NFL Live show alongside Laura Rutledge, Mina Kimes, Dan Orlovsky, and Marcus Spears. The show won multiple Emmy Awards during his tenure.

The Athletic reported the decision to let Clark go was driven in part by “some of his choices” — specifically an incident during ESPN’s Get Up in which Clark dismissed analyst Peter Schrager’s opinion because Schrager had never played in the NFL.

“That’s the non-player in you,” Clark told Schrager on-air during a debate.

“Don’t belittle me like that,” Schrager shot back. “I can come in and say as three ex-players are saying one thing, I can give an alternative perspective.”

Take a look —

apparently this factored into the Ryan Clark firing

Clark’s firing is part of a huge wave of layoffs at ESPN. The same day Karl Ravech, who joined the network in 1993 and spent more than 30 years calling Major League Baseball, was also let go. Additional cuts were expected throughout the week.

Clark has not yet issued a public statement.
