Pastor murdered by his brother in church on Sunday

An Ohio pastor with deep roots in the Dayton community was shot and killed in his church office as service was winding down Sunday, and police say they plan to charge his brother.

The Rev. William B. Schooler, 70, was shot around 12:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, Dayton police said.

His brother, Daniel Gregory Schooler, 68, was arrested at the church and taken to the Montgomery County jail. He faces a murder charge on Monday, said Sgt. Richard Blommel.

Police said they did not know Sunday what led to the shooting but said the pastor was the only intended victim.

Joyce Napier, the niece of the brothers, told the Dayton Daily News that Daniel Schooler had a history of mental illness, which she believes played a role in the shooting.

“I would think it has to be something’s going on in his head to do something like that, because we were raised to love,” she told the newspaper. “Family matters — that’s the way were raised.”

Besides being pastor at the church, William Schooler was a past interim president of the Dayton school board and current president of the local Baptist ministers union.

He was a teacher in the Dayton school district in the 1970s and served as a principal in the Jefferson Township district for nearly two decades, according to the Daily News. He also held other positons with community organizations and local governments, including serving as a certified city of Dayton mediator.

“He had deep roots in the community,” a friend, Ronnie Moreland, told the newspaper. “He was a beloved leader. It’s hard to put into words what has happened.”

Dayton City Commissioner Joey Williams told the Daily News he had discussed with Schooler ways to reduce violence in the community.

“For him to be a victim of violence is just extremely saddening,” Williams said.

Your second amendment rights do not include murder. It is only for self defense.

What a ridiculous statement—have you ever READ the 2nd Amendment???? Only someone “less informed” would make a idiotic statement like that. good grief. The second amendment has NOTHING to do with murder—or any other violent crime—if you don’t “understand” that please just look at Chicago, Philly etc.-you know, the cities with the strictest gun laws AND THE MOST GUN VIOLENCE. You obviously don’t “get it”-that criminals and the mentally ill–really don’t care about your gun law restrictions–and the majority of gun owners who exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights—-ARE NOT THE ONES COMMITTING THE VIOLENTS GUN CRIMES—

Please read the 2nd Amendment. It has nothing to do with murder, or any violent crime. According to the government’s own records, the cities with the highest gun violence in our country, are also the cities with the highest gun violence and murders by gun. Unfortunately, violent criminals or those with mental issues who feel they need to resolve grievances by murdering others, do not care about gun laws or restrictions-and they always find a way to get a gun. The 2nd Amendment has no effect on them–and taking it away would only effect the majority of American Citizens who belief in their right to defend themselves and their families.

It’s always bad when murder is committed. But the state is required to punish the murderer, so a second death in this case is indicated.

Maybe he supported the wrong candidate for president! This election is enough for anybody to kill somebody over the stupidity of Americans that are supporting candidates who should or shouldn’t be running for president. It is enough to drive somebody CRAZY, to the point of violence!
We have a Traitorous Lying Criminal running for the Democrats, and a whole bunch of Moronic Idiots running for the Republicans.
To stop all the insanity, maybe it is about time we have another third term President. I don’t like the current president, but at least we know what we got, versus the CRIMINAL LYING TRAITOR, and all the MORONS that want to be president.

Typical media sensationalism. First it was reported that he was killed in the service – NOT! Now they’re saying he was killed in his study. You would think by the age of 70 (no information about how old his brother was) you would have come to grips with most of your issues.
I wonder if it was over money. I have seen pastors aggressively besieged by sometimes nasty people (not even part of the congregation) wanting, demanding might be a better term, financial handouts. They can be downright scary. In the case of family members, certain people can be chronic abusers and are usually in the position they are in due to decisions they have made and in some cases gone against pastoral counsel. These people can be resisted, but you never know what kind of resentment that might create. It’s a tough call. You can go the extra mile and forgive 70 times 7 (and maybe that’s what Jesus would want) but on the other hand you don’t want to be a door mat. It’s God’s money so you’d better consult with him on the matter and do what he tells you. But whatever it is I would certainly pray for God’s intervention in the matter and then pray for his protection if it goes against the person’s wishes.
