California Rep. Maxine Waters has become a far-left celebrity for her constant promises to impeach President Donald Trump. It’s having the opposite effect, experts say.
For over a year, everywhere Waters goes — Hollywood award ceremonies, formal State dinners, and even funerals — she promises cheering crowds that she’ll “Impeach 45!”
That’s looking more and more unlikely to ever happen… and critics say a desperate Waters has resorted to throwing temper tantrums over the subject that are boosting Trump’s image among swing voters.
“If you had to give some advice to President Trump, what advice would you give him?” a reporter recently asked Waters on the Time 100 Awards red carpet.
“Please, resign so that I won’t have to keep up this fight of your having to be impeached,” an exasperated Waters replied. “Because I don’t think you deserve to be there. Just get out!”
Unfortunately for Waters, her impeachment rallying cry has backfired.
Rather than put Trump on the brink of ouster, the attacks seem to be helping Trump’s popularity among fed-up voters. Rasmussen Reports pollsters say the president’s approval rating has been gradually ticking up over the past four months. Even The New York Times has commented on the phenomenon.
“It is quite possible that trying to impeach and remove Trump could have the opposite effect than the one desired: It could boost rather than diminish his popularity and an acquittal by the Senate would leave an even more popular president in office,” columnist Charles Blow wrote Sunday.
