Authorities are searching for someone who left a puppy tied to a plastic shovel to drown on a Los Angeles-area beach.
The body of the brown-and-white terrier mix was found Friday by canoe paddlers at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey.
A blue-handled plastic shovel was stuck through the dog’s collar and into the sand, David Carpenter told Fox 11 (KTTV-TV).
“That act of cruelty, to me is unfathomable,” he said.
Authorities suspect the dog was unable to escape as the tide came in, but Carpenter had a different view.
“Either the dog was dead and placed there, which really doesn’t make too much sense,” Carpenter said. “More than likely somebody stuck the shovel through the collar … It’s a children’s shovel, and they had to have held it in place while the animal drowned and then eventually when it succumbed, left it there and walked away,” he said.
There was no word on a motive.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Animal Care and Control were investigating.
The dog had a registration tag, and authorities are seeking the owner.

I may be 73, but had I come upon whoever it was that did this I would have tried my best to beat him/her until he/she couldn’t get up. IF I just happened to be carrying my pistol, I might have taken out both knees. I love our dogs and cats and shoud I find one of them treated in that manner … I would really hate to see what I’d do if I ever found them.

Any person who takes pleasure in hurting any living creature should be identified and exterminated. An animal pet is helpless to defend itself so those who abuse hem are cowards.

People like this should get a taste of their own medicine. If he/she stood there and watched to make sure the puppy drowned, then this is a sign of someone who likes to kill.

Take this A-hole out to sea, cut him just a bit, put him in an non-escapable life jacket (so he can’t cowardly drown himself, then watch as he is devoured by many sharks.
