Company sued for not giving Muslims extra break time

A civil liberties group representing Muslim employees of a Wisconsin manufacturer has filed a religious discrimination complaint against the company for not allowing extra break time for prayer.

Ariens Co. fired seven Muslim employees earlier this year for taking unscheduled prayer time. Another 14 employees resigned over the break policy.

The lawnmower and snow blower manufacturer, based in Brillion, moved to enforce an existing rule of two 10-minute breaks per work shift in January. The company initially allowed the Muslim employees to leave their work stations a third time to accommodate prayers but concluded that disrupted production.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, filed a federal discrimination complaint on Tuesday. Ariens spokeswoman Ann Stilp says the company has 27 Muslim employees who are accommodated with prayer rooms.

    The ragheads know what the rules are when they are hired. If they can’t conform to them , then they should go back to where they came from !!!!! The sooner the better.

      I agree. Why should they get special exceptions to work rules? Christians and Jews don’t. I worked for a major manufacturing company and Good Friday was not one of the holidays listed in the labor contract. Employees who wanted to take Good Friday off work for religious services, were permitted to take a “vacation day” or were given an “unexcused absence” for the day, which went on their record.

      These people want to come here and change our country – not assimilate into our culture. Go back home if you can’t follow the laws and rules. Look what they are doing to Europe. It’s a mess over there. Their long-term goal is to take over the whole world. God help us!

      You are o so right Where do they come from that they can have more that the other employees. Should any one of my employ want more that the others, I just tell them to find another company that is willing to bow to their wishes and goodby. Muzzies go home…

      This is the result of the SC ruling thst A-F could not fire a female for wearing a burrka at work that offended some customers. It was supposedly her religious right to wear one. Maybe in islam where islamis the state religion that is supported and protected by the govt. Here stores are not churches/mosques, places of worship and places of worship are not places of commerce. Our govt, including the SC and other two branches operate in a chaotic fashion Aka banane republic form of govt which is one like socialism, where there is no foundation document to channel the activities of people, pols, along a path with defined boundaries/speed limits. We of course have such a document in Americas, the Constitution, but to quote Pelosi. Someday elected officials and judges will have to read it so they will know what is in it! I heard a guy on a TV channel say this. “We never hear what is in the Constitution. Only what the lawyers say is in it”. That pretty well sums up the source of the CHAOS they are trying to pass off to the public as government. It no longer is working. As Confucius said, supposedly. You can fools some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all the people all the time. This applies to all three branches. Isn’t that why we elect someone? To read the Constitution, to understand it and to govern in accordance with it. The time has come to get the rascals out, starting with the biggest rascal of all.. Who should resign rather then get charged with obstructing justice or get court martialed by the military? And forfeit his benefits while being prez. Sounds like a win-win plea bargain for everybody. .

    Why should Muslims get extra treatment based on their religion as it would be unfair to the other company employees. Maybe they should get their own company as thenm they can do what they want. I am sick and tired about Muslims getting what they want.

    CO, Swift packing plant had problems with women not wanting to wear uniforms for safety. Fired the Muslim women. Swift was sued! sold company to Brazilian company. Lots if problems with the prayer issues with Muslims.
    If a Christian person wanted prayer time at work or school, the government would probably arrest them.. TYSON HAD PROBLEMS IN TENNESSEE, MOVED PLANT TO RUSSIA. UNIONS BACKING MUSLIMS.
    Need to tell our Senators! No prayer time in schools for Christians! NO PRAYER TIME IN SCHOOLS AND WORK PLACE FOR ANY RELIGIONS. PRAYER FOR ALL RELIGIONS.

      nellie, be careful what you are asking for. You say “private companies” should not be allowed to give prayer time for religion. Do you really want more laws telling our private companies what they can and can not do? If a private company wants to give three hours a day for anyone or everyone for prayer, that should be their choice. The gov should only control when one religion or group of people get benefits that others do not.

      Yeah this is pretty ridiculous. If they win this suit, I’m changing over to a religion that says a person has to sleep the Holy Sleep Prayer at least 8 hours during daylight hours…. Then there’s the state of Sacred Drunkeness that has to be performed daily…

    They agreed to the company work policy when hired. There are no grounds to demand special treatment. This is a place of employment not a mosque for prayer in some middle eastern desert sand lot.
    Asimilate or get out and go elsewhere.

        I understand where you’re coming from, but I work in a union shop. The coal mines was a good example of the good that a union can do, but where I work it has become an absolute joke. Here it’s the tail wagging the dog. At about 40$/hr. you have people sitting around, drinking coffee, taking 6 or 7 coffee breaks, surfing the internet, etc. If you dare ask them to do something crazy, like their jobs, you get a steward to talk to. When I started here, if you filed a frivolous grievance, the steward would rip it up and tell you to go back to work. Now, not matter how petty or picayune the complaint, the steward has to act on it. Completely inept workers get promoted simply by being here longer than far superior workers, same with layoffs. You end up with an old, unmotivated work force. I’m sure if there were no unions, companies would take advantage of their workers, but there must be a middle ground somewhere.

    My dad was Seventh Day Adventist. This would have been around 1959. At each job interview he would make it clear that he won’t work Friday sunset through Saturday sunset. He always got decent jobs. Mostly because others generally wanted Sunday off so the schedule was a win /win. My point being, where there’s a will there’s a way. The businesses should be allowed to make their own rules.

    This is England where they allowed enough Muzzies to come into the country to elect a Muzzie mayor of London. It’s coming here, believe me. An easy way to stop these frivolous suits (I am a retired attorney) is for the judges to award attorney fees to the defendant.

    This reminds me of a recent situation involving Somalian Muslims working in Minneapolis Target stores. A few Muslims objected to handling pork products that were sealed in plastic. Target then moved these workers to jobs where they wouldn’t handle food. But it wasn’t long before these workers weren’t working at Target anymore. So listening to some fat flabby Iman lost these workers a decent Target job. The same will happen to these Muslims in Wisconsin. And soon this company, and other companies all over the US will be reluctant to hire these people for fear of stupid lawsuits. Enjoy the unemployment line, you dummies!!

    This is just another bunch of muslimes trying to impose their weird so called religion on others. Other companies have had the same problem. Either they follow the rules of the company, and this country, or leave.

    Reading the comments on this story reminds me of years past here in the UK, comments like “why should muslims get extra breaks” we in the UK went through all this and I’ll tell you something your politicians will be just as spineless as the European politicians and give them everything they want, why ? who knows ? because they believe in some Garbage about a magic man who flies around the moon on a winged horse and that’s their culture and has to be respected, unlike our own, which is fair game to be denigrated at every turn.

    Congress should simply write a law which states something similar to this:

    “Whereas America opened her arms and welcomed refugees from war-torn lands, and
    Whereas all such immigrants agreed to abide by US Law as a condition of their stay, and
    Whereas the practice, teaching, or imposition of Shar’ia law is contrary to US law,
    THEREFORE, all who practice, teach, impose or attempt to implement Shar’ia Law are to be immediately arrested and deported to the nearest country which DOES practice Shar’ia law, and all property owned by violators of this law will be sold to provide the transportation to said country; if not enough property exists to provide for the transportation, all violators will be, upon conviction, imprisoned at hard labor until they EARN enough to pay for their deportation.”
