A former New York City police officer accused of faking a mental disability to get more than $200,000 in Social Security benefits has been convicted of grand larceny.
The New York Times reports a state Supreme Court jury found 56-year-old Kevin Hurley guilty on Wednesday.
The Windsor man has said that he was unable to drive, manage money or shop due to depression and panic attacks.
Prosecutors say he paid his bills on time, drove his car more than 25,000 miles a year and made hundreds of purchases at stores and restaurants.
Hurley’s lawyer, Joseph Murray, says his client forced himself to leave the house.
More than 100 officers and firefighters have pleaded guilty in the scheme, including four ringleaders who’ve said they helped them fake post-traumatic stress symptoms.

I didn’t think police could collect S S ?
Cops like these make it look bad for the good ones.
Yes, there are good cops.
And you wonder why there’s no money for the people who really need it! Fraud is the problem that the government won’t tackle! ????
There is an exception to every rule, including this one. I have dealt with numerous police, my brother also, and never met one with an ounce of integrity. I am still hoping there is actually ONE exception.
When will Barry Soetoro be brought up on SS fraud? Have read he has used maybe 20 SS#’s, his main no. was originally registered to a man born in Russia in 1890. His SS# does not E verify.
If the fraud and abuse could be eradicated from Social Security and Social Security Disability, the program could continue without fear of bankruptcy. We pray if Mr. Trump wins the Presidency, he will take the necessary steps to “clean house” in not only SS, but all other programs and corrupt departments (like IRS) in our government. The current administration ignores these problems because they think they derive more votes from the abusers. They are the worst administration in our history.
Well, Mr. Hurley, you received a whopping $200,000. And you’re only 56. Not very smart. You’ll be regretting this as you barely exist in your retirement years. You screwed any future Police retirement benefit, and you probably also screwed up your future Social Security benefits. You will be a poor and miserable old man.
