President Joe Biden gave a speech to the NAACP last week, and the White House corrected him not once, not twice, but nine times.
He went viral for using the term “erectionists” instead of “insurrectionists,” and the rest of the speech wasn’t much better.
Here are the White House’s six most egregious corrections from the speech.
1. The Great Recession was not a pandemic.
“When I was vice president, things were kind of bad during the pandemic, and what happened was Barack said to me, ‘Go to Detroit and help fix it,'” Biden recalled. “Well, poor mayor, he spent more time with me than he ever thought he was going to have to.”
Biden was referring to the Great Recession, the conditions for the General Motors bailout in 2009. The White House corrected him accordingly.
Poor mayor, indeed.
2 and 3. You receive an award from an organization, not an organization from an award. Plus, you don’t receive anything from the “NAAC.”
“Folks, I’m humbled to receive this organization,” Biden said. “The NAAC spirit endures.”
It’s not too late to revoke the award.
4. Families are not saving $800,000 per year on insurance premiums (or $8,000).
“On my watch, more Black Americans have health insurance than ever in all of history,” Biden said. “I protected and expanded the Affordable Care Act, saving millions of families $800,000 in prem- — $8,000 [$800] in — a year in premiums.”
Biden said $800,000 before correcting himself to $8,000. Then, the White House corrected him to say $800.
Even after two corrections, the White House failed to give a citation.
5. Biden wants your rent to be… higher?!
Biden announced, “We’re cracking down on corporate landlords who keep rents down.”
The White House said that he was cracking down on corporate landlords to keep rents down.
Running on raising the rent doesn’t seem like a winning strategy.
6. The viral moment…
