It’s been a talking point of the Democrats for months: What’s Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump hiding in his tax returns?
Turns out their bombshell was more like a dud, and his leaked tax returns only prove Trump is an intelligent businessman that follows through with his fiduciary responsibility to investors.
The unexpected weekend revelation didn’t seem to go the way the media was expecting, and could instead bolster Trump with early voting already underway in some states and Election Day quickly approaching.
Ever defiant, Trump and his Republican allies embraced a report that said the New York businessman may not have paid federal income taxes for nearly two decades after he and his companies lost nearly $916 million in a single year.
Rather than defeat his campaign, the media attack injected a new sense of urgency into Trump’s White House bid with the next presidential debate less than a week away.
Trump is deciding whether to use the debate stage to attack Clinton’s role in the infidelities of her husband, former President Bill Clinton. That’s according to a person with intimate knowledge of Trump’s thinking as his senior advisers huddled Sunday for a rare session of debate preparation. The person was not authorized to discuss publicly the private conversations and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Publicly, however, Trump’s team was aggressively defiant on Sunday.
Neither New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie nor former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both top Trump supporters, disputed the report that said Trump’s loss in 1995 was big enough that he could have legally avoided paying taxes for as many as 18 years.
On “Fox News Sunday,” Christie declared it “a very, very good story for Donald Trump.” Giuliani called him “a genius at how to take advantage of legal remedies that can help your company survive and grow” on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Don’t you think a man who has this kind of economic genius is a lot better for the United States [than Hillary Clinton]? And the only thing she’s ever produced is a lot of work for the FBI checking out her emails,” Giuliani said.
Trump did not appear publicly on Sunday, but weighed in on social media, saying he was singularly qualified to fix the nation’s tax system.
“I know our complex tax laws better than anyone who has ever run for president and am the only one who can fix them,” he tweeted.
In a story published online late Saturday, The New York Times said it anonymously received the first pages of Trump’s 1995 state income tax filings in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The filings show a net loss of $915,729,293 in federal taxable income for the year.
That Trump was losing money during the early to mid-1990s — a period marked by bankruptcies and poor business decisions — was already well established.
But the records obtained by the Times show losses of such a magnitude that they potentially allowed Trump to avoid paying taxes for years, possibly until the end of the last decade.
His campaign said that Trump had paid “hundreds of millions” of dollars in other kinds of taxes over the years.
Trump has refused to release his tax returns, reporting that his lawyers advised him against it.

Trump followed the current tax laws. Hillary made 1,042,000 charitable contributions. Of that one million was paid to the Clinton Foundation which saved taxes on one million dollars, so she paid herself and then saved tax dollars. Only the Clinton Crime family can do that and nothing is said.
The other part of her charitable contribution went to an organization she is tied too as well. All her charity went to herself and Billie!

I believe you are confusing your perceived scandals. It was the Red Cross that supposedly raised hundreds of millions of dollars for Haitian earthquake victims but built only six houses. The Red Cross disputes that, of course. Former Presidents Clinton and Bush were the public face of US efforts to help the Haitians and the Clinton Foundation has apparently stayed involved by raising something like $30 million to try to create sustainable projects in the sectors of energy, tourism, agriculture, and apparel/manufacturing.
The Clinton Foundation is involved in helping to build houses for the victims of the Nepal earthquakes. That is being done in connection with the American Institute of Architects,and more than 500 homes are supposed to be completed by sometime next year.
I do agree that the Clinton Foundation should be subjected to scrutiny. When Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State, she agreed that the names of donors to the Foundation would be released. That was not done, and if she wants to be president, we the people are entitled to know about any potential financial conflicts.

We should remember that the wealthy usually avoid many of the “stick it to the rich” tax laws. They have the money to hire tax advisers who specialize in legally avoiding taxes. All these “soak the rich” schemes always nail the working class who makes the money but lacks the resources to hire the tax advisers.
The working class work all year and then do their taxes. The wealthy do their taxes first and work the rest of the year to their own benefit.
The Donald has done nothing wrong or illegal here. The USG sets the tax rules and regulations. The Donald took advantage of the US tax code to AVOID paying taxes, NOT EVADE paying taxes. That is standard accounting and business practice, within the letter of the law. In fact, the IRS continuously encourages individuals and businesses to find ways to minimize their federal tax liability.
What the Donald should do is, point out the flaws and loopholes that exist in the US Tax Code that enabled him to claim losses on his tax return, in the first place. The blame lies with the USG and the flawed tax system, not with the Donald and others like him that are smart enough to understand the tax code and use it to their advantage.
It is typical for the USG to implement flawed rules and regulations and then blame private citizens and businesses, when their rational economic response to those rules and regulations are inconsistent with regulatory objective(s). The government is responsible for developing and implementing economic policies – with the intent of modifying economic activities and behavior; private citizens and businesses adapt accordingly, but not always the way government expects or wants.
Maybe the IRS and the Attorney General should take a look at the Clinton Foundation and see whether the foundation is AVOIDING or EVADING the payment of taxes?

We used the same law on stock losses years ago….strictly legal to carry forward losses if they are more than the allowable maximum for one year’s deduction. We were past the age and income of actually ‘having’ to file but, I decided we should have it all checked out. We didn’t want trouble with the IRS. This lady accountant found we were ‘due’ for a rebate of over $3,000 that we didn’t know about!! A ‘God send’ at that time!! So–ignorance of the tax laws can cost you far more than you know!! No–being ‘wealthy’ just gets you ‘good help’! Also, personal taxes and business taxes are a ‘world apart’!! As in understanding the difference between ‘tax evasion’ and ‘tax avoidance’!!! ‘Avoidance’ is Legal!!!!
If it is thought that everyone should pay into income tax, regardless of their current income level, then a system similar to what homeowners pay, should be implemented. The wealthy do have bad years. I am thinking there would be a lot of bankruptcies and the will to invest would diminish along with a lot of jobs.

Trump has tax experts working for him that likely know the tax laws better than people working for IRS. If the IRS finds errors in Trump’s tax return you can be sure the media would try to make big event of it. But, if no errors are found in those returns you have to concede that Trump is taking advantage of the tax laws and paying a little tax as possible. A majority of taxpayers do the same thing. Clearly, the media is trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

BUT, what I would like to see is an investigation and publishing of the Clinton Charity. Leave no hidden or blatant “stone” unturned. The investigative reporter who would unearth and reveal ALL the salaries, ALL distribution of charitable funds, the recipients of such funds and amounts, and all contributors and the amounts contributed from each, would not only, likely, find it much more fascinating but receive journalism awards on a global level. Courage in Journalism Award, Data Journalism Award, and Investigative Reporters and Editors Award, to name just a few, could catapult the investigative reporter’s career. Trump’s tax filings/returns will not yield any awards.

It is not really a question of how much tax Trump paid or if he paid any at all. The question is did he break any tax laws? He has been frequently audited and if he had broken any tax laws he would almost certainly been charged with those violations. One posting suggested that the ultra rich don’t pay taxes while the ultra poor are gouged by taxes. That is not entirely accurate. The ultra rich may not pay taxes but neither do the ultra poor. Below a specific income level people do not owe any tax and receive a full refund on any they may have paid in. Not only do they get a full refund but they get an additional distribution of unearned money called erroneously an unearned income refund. It is the middle class that pays the bulk of all federal taxes. Politicians frequently claim that they are only going to raise taxes on the ultra rich but when the mirrors are removed and the smoke clears away we all pay more taxes.
Trump saved the Miss Universe job for Miss Venezuela 20 years ago. There was a contract that stated that she would maintain her appearance, not do drugs, or alcohol not get married etc. She gained 40 lbs- in violation of her contract. Those pageants pay well for the year the winner holds the title. He saved her job and she lost weight and life moved on. She is now boasting that she is a paid member of Hillary’s campaign. His strategies with bank loans, attracting new partners and taxes saved all the jobs of his Trump employees because he did not declare bankruptcy: he negotiated his loses and did a come back. Hillary has no business and little private sector experience and showed poor judgement and a lack of performance in the public sector. She is yesterday and Trump is today.
The media and in fact everyone should quit saying Trump was able to avoid paying taxes for 18 years. Using all available tax deductions HE DIDN’T OWE taxes for 18 years. Why would he avoid paying taxes when he didn’t owe them.
Additionally, Clinton asked “What kind if businessman loses a billion dollars?” Well, what kind of person loses 6 billion dollars from the State Department while she was in charge?
