When House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was lecturing a group about how much she cares for the poor, she was called out by a heckler — and a visibly flustered Pelosi refused to answer the question about her own wealth.
Pelosi, it seems, doesn’t want the world to know that she’s one of the wealthiest politicians in the United States.
Yet there she was at the podium, lecturing that regular Americans should pay more in taxes.
At least one lady in the crowd wasn’t having it — and exploded when Pelosi invoked Martin Luther King, Jr’s name.
“It can’t possibly be a statement of values for us to talk about, as Martin Luther King said, ‘God never intended for one group of people to live in superfluous inordinate wealth while others live in abject deadly poverty,'” Pelosi said to her supporters.
“So these are kitchen table issues for most of America’s families. Most people are not in deadly poverty, but some are. But most people have to struggle to…”
“How much are you worth, Nancy!?” a woman in the crowd shouted, causing Pelosi to pause.
“No, we’re not talking about that,” Pelosi replied. She then raised her voice and leaned into the microphone to speak over the woman. “In any event … I can … I’m a mother of five, I can speak louder than anybody.”
So how much is Pelosi worth? There’s no exact number available… but estimates say she’s very, very rich.
According to watchdog group Open Secrets, Pelosi had managed to turn her $193,400 salary into a net worth estimated to be over $100 million in assets in 2015. That year, she was ranked the fourth most wealthy Congressperson in the United States.
Pelosi also owns more than one multi-million dollar estate. And she keeps as much a distance between her and poor Americans as possible.
Her California mansion and sweeping vineyard, for example, sit 65 miles away from her representatives and has an estimated net worth between $5 and $25 million dollars.
“A description of the property posted on its architect’s website says it was inspired by Palladian villas and boasts a guesthouse and a ‘Z’ shaped pool,” The Los Angeles Times reported.
In fact, she’s so rich that money means almost nothing to her. Pelosi repeatedly referred to the $1,000 bonuses American workers were receiving because of President Donald Trump’s tax cuts as little more than “crumbs.”
So much for Republicans being the party of the rich.
