Amid heightening tensions in the U.S. and abroad, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s daughter asks that people keep in mind the values he exemplified.

She spoke to reporters Thursday after announcing several events leading up to the national holiday.

“I think one of the most important things that my father taught us and exemplified is valuing all human life.”

“He was a faithful patriot of the United States of America and yet, a global citizen and cared about what happened in other nations and other countries, and saw them as a part of his human family.”

“What we can learn is that there is nothing wrong with engaging people you may not agree with fully, to learn something from them.”
