The impeachment effort against President Donald Trump looks to have backfired on Democrats heading into the 2020 general election.
With a little over nine months left until ballots are counted in the presidential election, Trump’s overall approval rating is at a record high — and his net approval has reached the highest point since just after his 2017 inauguration.
Trump’s approval rating has remained at an elevated 49 percent since being acquitted in his Senate impeachment trial, according to Gallup.
For the first time since his inauguration, Trump’s approval rating is higher than his disapproval rating — 48 percent.
The soaring approval is thanks to independent voters. Trump’s approval rating has remained steady in the high-90th percentile among registered Republicans. Democrats widely disapprove of the president’s job performance.
43 percent of independents surveyed by Gallup say they approve of Trump, a record high for the all-important swing voter block.
“Trump’s elevated job approval rating comes at a time when Americans are increasingly positive about the state of the nation,” Gallup reported. “The percentage who are satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. had already improved from 36% to 41% in a Jan. 3-16 poll, before the rise in Trump’s job approval rating in late January.”
“The latest survey finds a further increase in national satisfaction, with 45% now satisfied, the highest since February 2005.”
The Gallup poll is just the latest in a series of good polling results for the president’s re-election campaign.
Overall, Trump’s approval has experienced a steady upswing since the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry was launched in November 2019.
