On Tuesday, President Donald Trump was ready.
Just minutes after presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign announced that Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., was his running mate, Trump pounced.
Harris was considered a frontrunner for months. The Horn News predicted she’d be named as Biden’s running mate in May.
Trump’s team was prepared for the announcement – and had a scathing attack ad ready to steal the Biden campaign’s thunder.
“Kamala Harris ran for president by rushing to the radical left,” the video begins. “Embracing Bernie’s plan for socialized medicine, calling for trillions in new taxes, and attacking Joe Biden’s racist policies.”
“Voters rejected Harris,” the video continues. “They smartly spotted a phony. But not Joe Biden. He’s not that smart.”
“Biden calls himself a ‘transition’ candidate and he is handing over the reigns to Kamala while they jointly embrace the radical left,” the video concludes. “Slow Joe. Phony Kamala. Perfect together. Wrong for America.”
In a press conference later that day, Trump blasted Harris as a “liar” that has told “many, many stories that weren’t true.”
Trump claimed that Harris would raise taxes while slashing funding for the military, and her prior statements against fracking would hurt her in potential swing states like Texas.
Biden’s campaign seemed prepared for the counteroffensive, noting that just weeks ago, Trump said Harris would be a “fine choice.”
Biden’s team also pointed out that campaign finance records show that Trump contributed as a private citizen to Harris’ attorney general campaigns in California. Trump’s campaign dismissed that, saying that as a private citizen Trump contributed to political campaigns for people on both sides of the aisle.
Harris was first elected to the Senate in 2016.
