It was a bad night to be a frontrunner in the Badger State.
Republican Donald Trump emerged from Wisconsin as a damaged frontrunner following a crushing loss to rival Ted Cruz, deepening questions about the billionaire businessman’s presidential qualifications and pushing the GOP toward a rare contested convention fight.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also scored a sweeping victory in Wisconsin’s primary that gives him a fresh incentive to keep challenging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
But it may be too soon to start celebrating the comeback. Sanders still lags Clinton significantly in the delegate count, and Cruz lacks the ability to win outside a contested GOP convention.
Both parties are turning their sights toward New York, which offers a massive delegate prize in its April 19 contests. It marks a homecoming of sorts for several candidates, with Trump, Clinton and Sanders all touting roots in the state.
Trump, who has dominated the Republican race for months, suddenly finds himself on the defensive as the campaign moves east.
Exit polls in Wisconsin highlighted the deep worries about Trump surging through some corners of the Republican Party. A majority of GOP voters said they’re either concerned about or scared of a potential Trump presidency, according to surveys conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and television networks.
Cruz has stepped forward as the candidate best positioned to block Trump, though it would likely take a convention battle to accomplish that goal. A Texas senator with a complicated relationship with Republican leaders, Cruz cast his Wisconsin victory as a “turning point” in the race and urged the party to rally around his candidacy.
“We’ve got the full spectrum of the Republican Party coming together and uniting behind this campaign,” he said.
Trump was unbowed in his defeat. His campaign put out a biting statement accusing Cruz of being “worse than a puppet — he is a Trojan horse, being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from Mr. Trump.”
Sanders still trails Clinton in the pledged delegate count and has so far been unable to persuade superdelegates— the party officials who can back any candidate — to drop their allegiance to the former secretary of state and back his campaign.
At a raucous rally in Wyoming, Sanders cast his victory as a sign of mounting momentum for his campaign.
“With our victory tonight in Wisconsin, we have now won 7 out of 8 of the last caucuses and primaries,” he declared.
With an overwhelming white electorate and liberal pockets of voters, Wisconsin was favorable territory for Sanders. In a sign of Clinton’s low expectations in the Midwestern state, she spent Tuesday night at a fundraiser with top donors in New York City.
Clinton congratulated Sanders on Twitter and thanked her supporters in Wisconsin. “To all the voters and volunteers who poured your hearts into this campaign: Forward!” she wrote.
Sanders’ win will net him a handful of additional delegates, but he’ll still lag Clinton significantly. With 86 delegates at stake in Wisconsin, Sanders will pick up at least 45 and Clinton will gain at least 31.
That means Sanders must still win 67 percent of the remaining delegates and uncommitted superdelegates in order to win the Democratic nomination.
Clinton’s campaign has cast her overall lead as nearly insurmountable. Yet Sanders’ continued presence in the race has become an irritant for Clinton, keeping her from turning her attention to the general election.
In the Republican race, Cruz was poised to collect most of Wisconsin’s 42 Republican delegates.
Trump still has a narrow path to claim the nomination by the end of the primaries on June 7. But by losing Wisconsin, the real estate mogul has little room for error in upcoming contests.
Complicating the primary landscape for both Cruz and Trump is the continuing candidacy of John Kasich. The Ohio governor’s only victory has come in his home state, but he’s still picking up delegates that would otherwise help Trump inch closer to the nomination or help Cruz catch up.
To win a prolonged convention fight, a candidate would need support from the individuals selected as delegates. The process of selecting those delegates is tedious, and will test the mettle of Trump’s slim campaign operation.
Cruz prevailed in an early organizational test in North Dakota, scooping up endorsements from delegates who were selected at the party’s state convention over the weekend. While all 28 go to the national convention as free agents, 10 said in interviews they were committed to Cruz. None has so far endorsed Trump.
Despite the concern among some Wisconsin Republicans about Trump becoming president, nearly 6 in 10 GOP voters there said the party should nominate the candidate with the most support in the primaries, which so far would be Trump. Even among voters who favored Cruz, 4 in 10 said the candidate with the most support going into the convention should be the party’s nominee.

Sanders would be the leader if the unethical super delegate scheme was ended. A Trump vs. Sanders election would be healthy for our stagnant democracy. I’d vote for Trump. I’m all in for a Trump win, but the way Wisconsin is set up (I think) is that delegates are winner take all in the district but is proportional state wide. To me this would mean that the one with the greater district win would be declared winner of the state. It is very confusing though that statewide, DT only got 9 delegates. Something is very disproportional with that. It sounds like a fix to me.

Trump won about 70% of the Counties in Wisconsin. He lost by a large margin in the two largest counties. Milwaukee and Waukesha, by the way these two counties had a much lower republican turn-out
than they had in 2012, all the other counties equaled or exceeded 2012. Trump needed to spend more time in these counties, each of these is almost double the size of the other counties.
Trump has no super-pacs, very little if any support from the party or entrenched establishment.
We the People need to contribute to Trump as much as Sanders supporters do. We must or we lose.

The definition of a conservative is one that wants strict interpretation of the constitution in order to preserve our constitutional rights and freedoms. The definition of a liberal is one that wants to either change or ignore the constitution in order to create a socialist/communist form of government in which the elitists run the show. Ted Cruz has already set a dangerous legal precedent by being a senator with dual citizenship. Do we really want people in congress that have allegiance to another country? Do we really want to thumb our nose at the constitution and be ok with a president that held dual citizenship? How can someone that thumbs his nose at the constitution to advance his political career be expected to defend it? Should Cruz be elected president we would then have set the precedent that constitutional citizenship requirements no longer matter. Obama has already set the precedent of not being able to prove American citizenship – natural born or naturalized. If the Republicans set a dual citizenship precedent then all citizenship requirements for a president will be gone forever – liberal lawyers and judges will have field day with that one. The media on all cable/satellite TV is trying to control these primaries. No longer can I stand to watch them take snippets from Trump and make him look bad. Even Fox News is stooping. I understand why the electoral college was created, but I would like to go with the popular vote which would be the vote of the people.

Both conventions could be contested. Everyone is already familiar with the Republicans so I will focus on the Democrats.
If Bernie continues to do well and Hillary scandals continue to surface some of the super delegates pledged to Hillary could decide to switch sides or throw their support to someone who avoided the primary altogether. The coattail effect ups the stakes for the party. There are still many people who vote a straight party ticket. That could spell doom for Democrats who will share the ballot with Hillary. If Hillary loses she is going to carry many of these down-ticket candidates into the loser bracket with her. The super delegates are aware of the coattail effect and how it can bless or curse a party.
The Republicans will pick their nominee first. If they emerge from their convention united and with a ticket which excites people the pressure is going to be on the Democrat super delegates. It will be interesting to see how much work Hillary has to do to hang onto the super delegates which have previously agreed to support her.
I would like to know why the investigative reporting piece published by the Daily Beast regarding Ted Cruz’s involvement in the radical, ultra right-wing religious group espousing “Dominionism” , which promotes Ted Cruz as the messiah and which Ted and his father Raphael have attended for decades, has not made it to the main stream media. I guess the establishment doesn’t want Ted weakened while he is the only tool they can use against Trump to stop him from getting to 1237 delegates. But do we really want a government run by the religious right, like Sharia, or do we still believe in separation of church ansld state?

That which is “Caesar’s” is his likeness and image(Christ specifically said “Show me a denarius,” then He asked “Whose likeness and image is on this coin?”, right?).
That which is God’s is everything else. EVERYthing. The metals in the coins? God’s. It’s like that old joke about God and the devil arguing about who could make a better man; God says to him, “Ok, you start.” The evil one says, “Ok, i’m going to take some of this dirt here and some of that water there,” and God says, “Get your own dirt and water.”
IMO, far too many attribute far too much to Caesar, and far too little to God.
Wonder when the media is going to mention that the New York Primary with 95 delegates is coming up on April 19 and the polls show Trump ahead by 27 to 31 %. I wonder if they will consider him a front runner then despite the fact that he leads Cruz by 256 delegates already. The media is simply trying to build Cruz into something he is not and that is the front runner. Winning Wisconsin was a good win but not nearly as significant as all the anti Trump people would have you think. Watch NY, CA and PA and then lets see what the pundits have to say.
I want to state at the outset that this comment has nothing to do with this article in particular. I am interested in sharing some bipartisan thoughts about the topic, We Are The Party, and address it to both Democrats and Republicans alike.
This election cycle has focused my thinking about the process we go through in both parties to select a candidate to represent us in the November elections. During the Democratic primaries Democrats vote for their choice but the “Party” has super delegates who are not beholding to the rank and file Democratic voter. On the Republican side it is apparent that when they don’t like who the rank and file Republicans are voting for “they” the “Party” try to decide who is going to be the nominee over the choice of the majority of their members. In both cases the Democratic and Republican parties forget that in reality you and I “Are the Party” and we should be the ones that ultimately decide who represents us.
To this end I am suggesting a voter “Revolution” where people push back hard on their respective parties and remind those in charge that you and I are the party and we really don’t care for these rules that take the ultimate say away from those of us who are also registered Democrats and Republicans. I would urge those of you who agree to write and call your respective Congressional, State and Local representatives to complain about the “process” in addition to the DNC and RNC depending on your party affiliation.
I think its time that the people involved in the political process understand that they only derive their authority from the People when we give it to them and WE need to recognize that when we acquiesce and let them do as they wish we are abrogating our individual prerogatives to have them represent us as we would like to be represented.
Those of you who feel you agree with my sentiments are free to use this statement in any comments or letters or conversations you have. It is my intention to insert this statement in the comments of every article I read online and to hopefully start a movement that will hold both political parties accountable to their members.
