In a tweet targeting a U.S. company, President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to slap a tax on General Motors for importing compact cars to the U.S. from Mexico.
But GM makes the vast majority of compact Chevrolet Cruzes in Lordstown, Ohio, near Cleveland.
Trump tweeted early Tuesday:
General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 3, 2017
GM saw the tweet and is formulating a response.
Shares of GM fell 0.4 percent to $34.70 in premarket trading after the tweet.
Last year Trump threatened to tax Ford, which plans to shift production of the compact Focus to Mexico. Jobs at the U.S. factory that makes Focuses would be preserved because the plant would get a new pickup and SUV.

I would rather buy a foreign named car that’s built here in the US than buy an “American” car built in Mexico. Cars made in the US put many people to work, helping out economy, helping our people’s families. Cars made in Mexico only help the filthy rich CEOs who have offices here in the States.
Thank you Donald Trump for exposing how the greedy practices of corporations like this are hurting our country.
His greedy practices are equally as bad ! His and his daughter’s clothing lines are “Made in China” ! Just a bit of a double standard. No one should out source, except he and Ivanka! Hmmm
What about all the GM cars built in Canada? Are those jobs coming back too? Why dont Canada and Mexico have their own car companies so they can put their cars on the market and compete like all the Asian brands. Thats capitalism.

Do we want the government telling business how to operate or just make it more advantageous for them to stay here? It doesn’t matter what party is in control. Control by government is control by government.
Good point, Chris. Let the government create the business friendly environment, let the companies themselves decide how to operate within that system. I remember in 2008, when Boob-bama Goose-stepped into control of General Motors, creating Government Motors, Frog-Marching the CEO out of office, and nearly ruining General Motors, in the process. And that brings me to my other concern: I think President Trump should limit himself to running the govenment in accordance with the US Constitution, unlike the present administration. To meddle in the affairs of private business seems to me, an overreach. I didn’t like it when Boob-bama did it. Somehow, I minded it less when I heard that President Trump was considering it, but I AM concerned that once started, the practice would become standard practice, then any Yahoo could step into office and start throwing hiw weight around, just as Boob-bama did with General Motors, and Chrysler.
I don’t mind if U.S. car companies make vehicles in Mexico as long as they sell them there and don’t import them back in to the U.S.. I am tired of companies manufacturing in foreign countries to sell it here. All this foreign manufacture just makes Wall Street and CEO’s rich. I no longer buy Wrangler jeans because of their move from Oklahoma.
And don’t bet that your foreign label car is any more made in the U.S. than a domestic car maker does. Many parts are made in foreign countries then shipped in to America to be assembled just as domestics do because those parts are no longer made in the U.S.
The other thing that makes me laugh is that no jobs were being lost to make a Ford product in Mehico because a new line would be made here. Why not just make all products here that will be sold in the U.S. and support this Countries standard of living for ALL people instead of just the talkers. .
No matter where the car is made if it is not made in the USA there should be a import tax any car not made here should face a tax Canada or Mexico wherever England if our car makers want to make cars elsewhere so they can make more money they should pay a tax period
My car is 75 years old. It is a ford sedan. I WILL NOT OWN ANY LATE MODEL CAR! Especially any jap car, personal expierience with ones my parents owned, decades ago show them to be Grossly inferior in quality. And as far as Canadian built cars, those jobs were not stolen from U.S. workers! Those are subsidary operations. Also my car is not completely stock. But it is all flathead period ford parts.
I have no problem with going after GM. After being bailed out by We the People, GM moved 20% of its manufacturing to China. Slam. Bam. Thank you, ma’am.
I admit that i LIKE that Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises. Maybe. His tweeted salvo may only be the beginning of his negotiation position, too, you see?
i think he’s smart to offer both a carrot and a stick. Eat or be beaten, that seems to be the choice – and as far as “America First” goes, i’m all for it. Bring tne jobs back to Americans, or pay the price for taking them out. Yep. I like it.

We have lost jobs to Canada, I worked at a parts plant for Ford the profit from the plant we were told by the manager was around 43 million! We had a door lock line we lost to Canada that cost us 100 employees! We lost other jobs to Mexico and the plant was sold!
It’s all about money. But we don’t have money according to the Constitution. We have slugs and paper notes that only have what value the Government makes it to be. Since the dollar is so useless in value, it makes the elite want to do business with foreigners here at home and abroad where costs can be minimized and keep profits strong. Do the math.
