President Donald Trump called for the criminal prosecution of California Senator Adam Schiff on Tuesday, accusing his longtime political adversary of mortgage fraud involving his Maryland residence.
Writing on Truth Social Tuesday morning, Trump claimed he had received proof from the federally-backed mortgage lender Fannie Mae indicating that Schiff “has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud.”
The president accused the Democratic leader of falsely claiming a Potomac, Maryland house he has owned for decades as his primary residence while representing California in Congress, in order to gain more favorable interest rates.
“Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA. I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice,” Trump wrote.
According to Trump, the fraud began with a refinancing of Schiff’s Maryland property in 2009 and continued until the home was designated as a second residence in 2020.
Trump specifically said the Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division had concluded that Schiff obtained cheaper mortgage rates because of a false designation of his Maryland property as his primary residence.
Schiff has represented California in Washington since 2001 and for almost all of that time has maintained a home in Maryland where he has lived with his wife and where his children have attended public schools. He also keeps a condominium in Burbank, California, which is part of his former Los Angeles-area House district.
The senator, who won his seat in 2024 after serving over two decades in the House, has not responded publicly to Trump’s accusations. Schiff played a prominent role in both Trump impeachment proceedings and has been a frequent critic of the president’s policies and conduct throughout both administrations.
