Former President Donald Trump’s campaign advisor quietly made an announcement Tuesday on the search for the Republican presidential nominee’s running mate.
Don’t get too excited, they warned.
Senior Trump advisor Jason Miller told NBC News that the shortlist for Trump’s VP selection is “growing and getting longer” — not narrowing.
The president is “well on his way” to clinching the Republican nomination, NBC News said. “We know he’ll ultimately make the decision on a running mate. But if you have his ear, who do you hope he selects?”
“Great question. That’s the best way to become a former senior advisor if I leaked that out on Super Tuesday night,” Miller joked because he cautioned that the Trump team is “quite a ways away” from making a final decision for his running mate.
“I have my list. I have some folks that I like,” Miller said. “But I will say this, in all seriousness: I think the list is actually growing and getting longer.”
“Because, as President Trump is interacting with all the folks who could be potential VP picks, there are so many impressive prospects that are out there.”
“I think we’re quite a ways away from seeing anything official,” Miller concluded.
Trump himself has teased a running mate shortlist, and confirmed last month to Fox News that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott are all being considered.
Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham at the time that “you would like to get somebody that could help you from the voter standpoint” and that he’d want someone with “common sense.”
“I always say I want people with common sense, because there’s so many things happening in this country that don’t make any sense,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley formerly suspended her Republican presidential campaign on Wednesday. Haley, the last major rival to Trump’s campaign, declined to endorse the former president.
Haley was “honored to have received the support of millions of Americans across the country … including in Vermont where Nikki became the first Republican woman to win two presidential primary contests,” her campaign spokeswoman, Olivia Perez-Cubas, said Tuesday night.
“Unity is not achieved by simply claiming ‘we’re united,'” she said about calls to unite behind Trump. “In state after state, there remains a large block of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump. That is not the unity our party needs for success. Addressing those voters’ concerns will make the Republican Party and America better.”
The statement was in response to Miller calls for Republican unity Tuesday after Trump’s sizeable wins.
