It has been alleged that former President Barack Obama has been working behind the scenes to try to block efforts to examine his administration’s dealings with Ukraine.
And Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says he’s found a “smoking gun.”
“There’s been rumors for quite a while that people within the Obama Administration knew about the corruption problems with Hunter Biden, that they warned the vice president and maybe even the president about it,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. told Fox News.
And he’s telling Americans why.
“There have been some articles written, quoting unnamed sources saying that there were some assistants and people around Joe Biden at the time, saying this Hunter Biden thing looks bad and you should put a stop to it,” Paul added. “And they never did.”
In other words, Obama knew Hunter was bad business.
Republicans have raised questions about Hunter’s seemingly suspicious arrangement in Ukraine – with Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa and Ron Johnson, R-Wis. asking the National Archives for related Obama administration documents.
They want to know if any U.S. policy decisions on Ukraine were related to or influenced by Hunter Biden’s gig with Burisma.
But Team Obama has been trying to block the effort to seek the records.
BuzzFeed News obtained a letter from the Obama office sent in March calling the request improper – and dismissing it as an attempt to serve “a fictional narrative that is being perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services.”
And of course, this looks bad for Obama’s legacy… something he hasn’t been shy about trying to protect.
Paul thinks these records could undermine all of that because it’s not just the staff that knew about the questions over Hunter Biden’s allegedly shady dealings.
The senator suggested it went all the way to the top – to the Oval Office itself.
“I think that there could be a smoking gun,” he said. “That there’s actually a record of some of these complaints that were going on at the time.”
“… I think President Obama knew about this,” he said. “So it’s not surprising to me that he would try to keep a lid on it and not let any records come to the public.”
He might not be able to keep a lid on it much longer: The National Archives turned over close to 10,000 pages of Obama administration materials to the Senate.
Obama’s office ultimately agreed to the release, according to BuzzFeed News.
But his office did so begrudgingly, calling the move an “abuse” that “strikes at the heart of presidential confidentiality interests and undermines the statutory framework and norms that govern access to presidential records.”
Soon, Americans could find out why the former president is working so hard to keep these records secret.
And if Sen. Paul is right, it could have major ramifications on November’s election.
Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President – and current presidential candidate – Joe Biden, was involved in unusual dealings in Ukraine.
He sat on the board of natural gas company Burisma, earning a reported $50,000 a month, despite no experience or qualifications in the industry – and he did it while his father was not only vice president, but also serving as the administration’s point man for Ukraine.
