Thousands sign petition for open carry at Republican National Convention

A petition seeking to allow firearms to be openly carried inside the arena for this summer’s Republican National Convention is sparking debate, attracting tens of thousands of signatures in a matter of days. But it’s raising questions about whether it’s for real — or satire.

The petition was created on change.org last week. In a matter of days, tens of thousands of people had signed it.

Some have weighed in, calling it a great idea to keep convention-goers safe. Others are voicing concerns about the prospect of gunfights breaking out inside the arena during what is predicted to be a volatile convention.

It’s likely to be only a theoretical question. The Secret Service, which is in charge of security at presidential conventions, says it won’t allow firearms inside the hall.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

The only ones that would get shot are the dumb ass establishment leaders of the RNC

Why does the Secret Service have the right to deny citizens of their Second Ammendment Constitutional Right to keep and bear arms? Can someone please point out where that is in the Constitution?

Where in the Constitution does it say that the Secret Service has the right to deny the public their 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms? I can’t find it.

No one is saying you can not keep and bear arms; just, that you can’t do it on PRIVATE Property that the Service is REQUIRED by law to protect as long as the next President maybe present, which is pretty much for the whole RNC Convention. Even the Marines wouldn’t allow others in with side arms, unless they wanted to end up with a Turkey Shoot, but … then We (the US) has more Marines than we do Secret Service agents who would be out numbered by the hundreds with side arms. Since more than ten percent of the US population has a alcohol and/or drug problem even if the ‘party’ only has 5% in attendance – over 50 people with fire arms will be drunk or high. A dispute could start over anything even over someone’s perception of being ‘disrespected’. The RNC would have an image problem that even the NRA would have a problem with. Gun Fight at the RNC Convention or RNC takes on the OK Corral at Convention. How many in the establishment would blame this on Trump? After all side arms were not allowed in until Trump came along.
Are you trying to hand the White House to the Clintons or what?

Why are you assuming that law-abiding, licensed gun owners who have been background checked, finger printed, taken courses in the law, and proven that they are proefficient with a firearm would be drunks or drug users? These are law abiding citizens licensed and qualified to carry firearms safely. Would you apply the same requirements to law enforcement, who are also trained and licensed? Where in the Second Amendment to the Constitution does it say the right to keep and bear arms depends on whether it is not on private property, or if the government allows it?

You Ron need to reread what DAR wrote and understand the soundness of it. THERE IS NO RATIONAL REASON TO CARRY AT THIS CONVENTION FOR GOD SAKES!

        Ron-
Where does the Constitution say that one must be “trained and licensed” in order to either keep or bear arms, or both?

Did you know that a Right cannot be licensed, and if fools agree to be “licensed,” they have – either wittingly or unwittingly, but stupidly, either way – turned their Right into a Privilege? (a “license” is permission “from competent authority”[whatever that means] to do a thing that without such permission, would be unlawful.)

That said, i agree with the previous poster who noted that the Republican Convention is NOT a public event, but a private one, and they get to set the rules. For example, let’s say i throw a party at my house and invite several people. Some RSVP and say that they’ll be coming armed. i call them back and say “Sorry; no one can come who is armed; if you disagree, you are free to not come.” Suppose some of these people are stubborn and insist on coming armed anyway; do i have a right to have my security disarm them or have them arrested – at a minimum, for trespassing?

Considering the wacky protestors that have shown up for the Trump rallies I’m not sure adding firearms to the mix is wise. I can see liberal operatives paying armed troublemakers to go into the convention hall and then create chaos. Most states have yet to select their delegates. It would be possible for an activist group to get several of their people into some of the state delegations.

How many people have benefited from Texas Open carry. Rape, robbery, assaults and many other crime have decreased 10 fold. So what’s so bad about open carry?

Just imagine/- if all of us were given a gun before boarding a plane – the terrorist would think twice about doing anything because they would be out numbered. Same goes for all the other situations. Good people with guns will scare away the bad people with guns.

But good people – even the best of good people – will have bad days. What happens when one of the passengers is going to the funeral of a loved one, is despondent anyway, and decides to blow a window out of the plane at 30K feet? Or kill as many fellow passengers as possible before blowing their own brains out? So keeping arms off of planes except for well-trained Federal marshals (or even local police in plain clothes) is more advisable, methinks.

Just because you HAVE a Right does not mean it should ALWAYS be exercised.

Just read some info which stated that the whole “open carry @ Republican convention” was a H “I Liar” Y trick.

Slight correction; the hoax is tied to a “liberal Clinton supporter.” He was known by his online handle “hyperationalist,” and identified himself to the reporter only as “Jim,” saying he had received death threats for his trouble.

In a way, the hoax can be seen as a bit humorous, from my point of view – especially considering what i’ve read on various posts lately about the ‘circular firing squad.’

I am a life member of the NRA and also have a concealed carry. Even though I am a firm believer in the second amendment, I am also a firm believer in obeying the law. Even in the Old West, there were certain towns in which the cowboy would have to turn his gun in to enter. That has nothing to do with the cowboy’s second amendment rights, it is merely a law enforced by that town…. Not the Federal Government.

Here’s something you may enjoy learning about, maybe even using from time to time, as needed:

“The right to defy an unconstitutional statute is basic in our scheme. Even when an ordinance requires a permit to make a speech, to deliver a sermon, to picket, to parade, or to assemble, it need not be honored when it’s invalid on its face.”
      — Justice Potter Stewart(1915-1985), U. S. Supreme Court Justice
      Source: Walker v. Birmingham, 1967

Every town’s officials swear an oath of fealty to the Constitution, ergo it is entirely Unconstitutional for them to “forbid” the carrying of arms within it’s limits…in fact, all those who attempt to enforce such a “law” have provided primae facie evidence of felony perjury, i.e. Oath-breaking…for their Oath requires them to uphold the 2nd Amendment, and expressly forbids them from infringing upon it.

        Constitutionalist:

Thank you sir for the info. I can see the logic but, had never considered it that way. I joined the NRA only to protect our rights as citizens, and not because I am a real gun enthusiast. Obviously, I do know how to use a gun, but never developed a real interest to them. I also paid for my son’s life membership and he is into guns much more than I am. That was one gift that he will remember for the rest of his life. My main thought concerning guns is that we do not need any gun control. What we desperately need is people control.

Justin it is the liberals who are volatile. You can see it everyday. All I have to do is say go Trump and I have a dozen people jump down my throat a screaming at me. If you do not believe me go stand on a busy corner for an hour and see for yourself.
