Mayor Tiffany Henyard, a Democrat, presided over her Illinois town’s bi-monthly town hall meeting on Monday…. and the meeting quickly devolved into chaos.
The citizens of Dolton have become increasingly irate at Henyard since she took office. One constituent reportedly said inside the meeting, “They say that you’re the worst mayor in America. I agree.”
About 25 constituents picketed in front of their scandal-ridden mayor.
The village’s trustees accuse Henyard of protecting her own profits by refusing to pay vendors’ bills. Some have even accused her of using these funds to take lavish trips to Las Vegas.
“You need to step down, because you have disgraced this village. You really have,” one constituent said at the meeting.
Another said, “I wouldn’t trust this woman if she stood on a stack of Bibles and had her tongue notarized.”
Other constituents support keeping Henyard as mayor and describe her as a unifying force.
Henyard has defended her inaction toward the business community. “Our job is to take care of the business and not allow the business to handle us,” Henyard said at the meeting.
FOX 32 Chicago spoke to a 38-year resident excluded from the meeting after trying to retrieve some paperwork. She said she’d been excluded “not one time” before.
“Y’all do know this is a government building?” she asked the authorities, rhetorically.
Authorities claimed to have been protecting the mayor from security threats.
The police chief informed ABC 7 Chicago of an unspecified security threat. “If we get another credible threat, the meeting will be closed,” one officer said in front of reporters.
In any case, Henyard stands accused of weaponizing the police against her critics. About 25 constituents stood outside and chanted, “Let us in.”
