The Democratic socialist takeover of the Democratic Party just went national.
A 29-year-old socialist who called the Hamas massacre on October 7 “inevitable” and refused to condemn the firebombing of a Jewish rally defeated a 30-year Democratic incumbent in Colorado Tuesday night.
It is the latest domino to fall as the radical left tightens its control of the Democratic Party.
Melat Kiros defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, riding the same wave that swept socialist candidates to victory over establishment House Democrats in New York just one week earlier.
The Democratic Socialists of America had made no secret of what was coming. After their New York wins, the DSA bragged, “Today, the East Coast, next week the Mountain West.”
Kiros wasted no time in her victory speech spelling out exactly what her brand of “change” looks like.
“Denver voters of all ages, of all races, of all religions sent a clear message: We will not wait!” Kiros told a cheering crowd. “We will not wait to take the fight to Donald Trump and the oligarchy. We will not wait to abolish ICE and pass Medicare for All. We will not wait to put an end to the politics of the past, to get big money out of our politics and to reject corporate PACs and AIPAC. And no, we will not wait to end the genocide in Palestine.”
She was born the same year DeGette first took office.
Kiros was fired from one of the country’s top law firms, Sidley Austin, in 2023 after refusing to take down a blog post defending pro-Hamas protesters in the wake of the Islamic terror attacks on October 7, when over 1,000 innocent Israeli civilians were raped, tortured, and babies were burned alive. She called the massacre “the inevitable consequence of apartheid, of decades of occupation.”
When asked about the 2025 firebombing of a Jewish community rally in Boulder, Colorado, she refused to call it an antisemitic attack.
“I don’t know what was in the heart of the perpetrator,” she said. “All I know is that he went and attacked innocent people because of what they might have believed.”
Voters in Denver’s deep-blue district didn’t care. The district gave Kamala Harris 77% of the vote in 2024. It hasn’t elected a Republican since 1970. Kiros received backing from Sen. Bernie Sanders, the DSA, Justice Democrats, and the radical Sunrise Movement.
One of the few remaining moderate Democrats is sounding the alarm. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) recently unloaded on the socialist insurgency on Fox News, calling it “the dancing days of the dirtbag left.”
“These are the emerging full pro-Hamas wing,” Fetterman said. “A lot of these candidates that very likely are going to win … [and are] just declaring a war on just regular Democrats.”
“You have such contempt for Israel, I mean, of course, you’re also anti-American, and you’re anti-Western civilization,” Fetterman warned.
Kiros is now the heavy favorite to win in November.
