In an unexpected twist during Thursday’s presidential debate, a discussion about golf handicaps became one of the most contentious exchanges between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
The debate, which covered crucial topics such as the economy, illegal immigration, and foreign policy, took a personal turn when the candidates started defending about their golfing abilities.
Trump, responding to a question about his fitness for office, claimed to be in “very good shape” and boasted about recently winning two golf championships at his country clubs.
He then took a jab at Biden’s health, claiming the president “can’t hit a ball 50 yards.”
Biden, appearing somewhat raspy and confused, countered by challenging Trump to a golf match.
He claimed to have lowered his handicap to six during his vice presidency, adding, “I’m happy to play golf with you if you can carry your own bag. Think you can do it?”
Trump disputed Biden’s handicap claim, calling it “the biggest lie of all” and stating, “I’ve seen your swing, I know your swing.”
A confused Biden then seemed to contradict himself, mentioning he was an “eight handicap.”
Official records from the United States Golf Association show Biden’s handicap as 6.7 (last updated July 2018) and Trump’s as 2.5 (last updated June 2021).
