He’s the master of the deal, and he’s not afraid of a fight in the court room.
Now, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has turned a hit piece over the weekend from The New York Times on it’s head — and it could cost the paper millions.
A top attorney for Trump told CNN on Monday that if the paper didn’t retract the story, a lawsuit is a strong possibility.
The article in question, titled, “Crossing the Line: How Donald Trump Behaved With Women in Private” claims to “reveal unwelcome advances, a shrewd reliance on ambition, and unsettling workplace conduct over decades.”
The first line of the article reads, “Donald J. Trump had barely met Rowanne Brewer Lane when he asked her to change out of her clothes.”
Brewer claims she was grossly represented and appeared in an interview with “Fox and Friends,” which Trump tweeted —
Rowanne Brewer, the most prominently depicted woman in the failing @nytimes story yesterday joined @foxandfriends. https://t.co/qkK3LJPoQQ
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 16, 2016
If the story turns out to be as false as Brewer is claiming, The New York Times is guilty of libel, Trump claims — and that could cost the paper big.
No wonder the @nytimes is failing—who can believe what they write after the false, malicious & libelous story they did on me.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 16, 2016
In March, a Florida jury sided with ex-pro wrestler Hulk Hogan and awarded him $115 million after he accused online magazine Gawker of libel when they released a sex tape of him.
If the cost of Hogan’s embarrassment was determined to be $115 million, it’s hard to imagine the staggering cost a jury would associate with libel that potentially cost someone the presidency.

Why are people so concerned with Trumps (or anyone, for that matter) personal life? That’s a sign of “voyeurism”! Are we so in need of stimulation that we need to know the actions of people in the public eye? Get a life! All we need to know is that Trump CAN do the job, NOT what his personal life is or has been.
Chris says
I’m not a big fan of Trump or a Trump supporter, but this has been the normal for the state ran left wing media during the last two presidential elections. They’re goal is to slander and misrepresent the Republican candidate to achieve brownie points for the demoncrat nominee. I hope Trump makes an example out of them and sues the snot out of them. It is difficult for any republican to win an election when they are having to run against a democrat and the media.
Chris says
Their goal…
not “They’re goal….”

They have 20 reporters looking into Trump for dirt. Kinda reminds me of the 25 reporters dumpster diving through Sarah Palin’s trash looking at emails and finding nothing. This was when she was NOT an elected official OR candidate for anything. YET….no one bothered to vet any aspect of Barack Obama and will certainly not harshly scrutinize Hillary or Bill Clinton. When Bush ran, they crawled up his backside with a proctoscope and floodlight. When they found nothing, then manufactured crap on an old typewriter—goodbye Dan Rather and Mary Mapes.

Well stated. They will never leave Trump alone. They’ll dog him in the White House as well. Amazing how they don’t pursue the real dirt on Bill and Hillary. There is so much of it. That would wake up the 6 pack reality TV show crowd.

Bread and circuses. Keep the sheeple distracted form anything with real consequences until the deed’s done. Never could see why celebrity gossip had such a large fraction of so-called “news,” I guess our goldfish attention spans can’t focus on anything less ephemeral.

Go Donald, the media needs to be exposed and to pay a penalty for obstruction of the truth.
Theresa brex says
Your Donald touts national enquirer and info wars as reasl news.
Your Donny is an opponent of free speech. He has his NYC campaign volunteers sign a non disclosure preventing them from saying anything negative about trump, his family or company.
He often states ” they shouldn’t be ALLOWED to say that”.
He threatens to tighten the libel laws.
He makes threats against anyone who disagrees with him, including the new mayor of London.
If he gets in, kiss 1st amendment buy bye.
Rebecca says
The media needs to be taught a lesson. The freedom of speech does not mean that they have a right to abuse the freedom. Publishing damaging stories about decent Americans is not free speech. What we do in our private lives is our business and the media is abusing our right to privacy which is above the freedom of speech. I hope The NYT gets sued for trying to tarnish Trump’s reputation.
carlcasino says
Rebecca! I would contend that the media is short sighted. In case they have not been paying attention the Medias 1st Amendment right is being challenged by having all media people having to be re-vetted before the conventions. If I can still read the 1st A carries the same “Shall Not ” as the 2nd A. I know it’s just a matter of filling out some paperwork and having an FBI background check, but it’s a crack in the armor. When the Emperor decides that your publication or news outlet Is not to his taste, expect an IRS audit every year as starters.

This is what happens when NY Slimes takes active role in skewing the election process!
law5960 says
Duh! Donald Trump is a reality tv star who was made by the media and whose campaign has depended completely on the media. He not only wants the Times and every other media outlet to stay involved, he absolutely needs any kind of publicity he can get. The same thing would happen if some Kardashian was running for president. And the Times and other media will take an active role in what you call skewing the election process no matter who is running. The Horn News here is perhaps the worst offender in its repeated pandering to the Trumpettes.

i think there is a little button you can click that says “unsubscribe”. Or would you rather just read the truth and then complain about it. Give us non-liberals a chance to have at least one site that is not completely controlled by the libs. Why don’t you use MSNBC for your news – I think they would suit you just fine.
law5960 says
Southern Man, you seem like an intelligent person so you probably realize that there is not much difference between the so-called liberal and conservative media. The message is the same whether the words are saying that Hillary Clinton should be indicted for whatever her sin of the day may be or that Donald Trump is a three card monte hustler with ties to the mob and a penchant for forcing widows out of their homes. Only the names are changing from one to another to appeal to the prejudices of certain consumers of the “news.” I just hope that by the time November comes around there will be enough voters who have decided to think for themselves, to the exclusion of what they are being spoon fed, that the end result will be an intelligent choice.
Steve 'da ol' SmoekDog says
Is law5960 another paid troll collecting some of the million dollars that the Clinton campaign has set up to disrupt conservative sites? Looks like it to me.
Face it, anybody that thinks Trump is “Only a TV star” has their head firmly planted up their ass. No body who has ANY knowledge of Trump’s background could actually believe that drivel . The TV show was just a lark and not 2% of what Trump has done in his life and has nothing at all to do with his business life.
law5960 (who is a coward that dose not use their real name) likely is only sending out something that were given by the troll managers to send out and disrupt Conservative conversations..
law5960 says
SmoekDog, if that’s your real name, I don’t know what you have been smoking, but you ought to lay off that stuff. As to the million dollars from the Clinton campaign, that may not be such a bad gig for some of the unemployed people I know. Can you disclose where one would apply for the job?
carlcasino says
Law 5960; What would you consider an intelligent choice? Mark Cuban, Bloomberg? Just throw us your best intellectual opinion? I’m truly interested. I happen to live in fly over country and I think Bernie would cement the idea that America is no longer a Constitutional Republic. Hillary has already conceded that Bill will run the economy in her administration leaving foreign policy to her resounding success as The Emperor’s Sect. of State. What a self back patting admission of failure. The Donald is a TV Star and an entrepreneur that parlayed a million $ loan or gift into a few Billion, as best I can tell so far by using laws that Congress passed. Does the way he does not speak politician offend you? It does not offend me but I would think he would speak more like a NYer than a Jersey Shore longshoreman. I can look at the 17 candidates fielded by the Republicans and say the bench is deeper on the R side than the D side. I had 3 or 4 other candidates I would like to have been given the nod but I will respect the voters even if Mark Twain explained ” that if voting made any difference ,THEY would not let us do it. Voter fraud, Voter ID comes to mind.
law5960 says
Let me tell you what seems likely, based on the current state of affairs (and subject to change). I believe that voters are going to find Hillary Clinton the lesser of two evils and we will be stuck with our second President Clinton. She will turn out to be what P. J. O’Rourke has called “Jimmy Carter in a pants suit.” In 2020, everyone will be disgusted with her, the Republicans will have somehow gotten their act together (either as the party of Trump or the party of Ryan) and they will come up with a viable candidate who offers hope of some real change. For now, we are stuck with the two evils.

Increasingly we find our media is less than creditable. The edited release 9f the Zimmerman 911 tape, the Duke rape case, tv reporters screaming “the fix was in” over and over to incite rioting in Ferguson, on and on.
The print media is dying and the digital media is on a constant quest for ratings. At no time can I recall the media ever being this bad. But it’s gotten so far out of line that I think everything released is a lie. What have we come to? So truly sad that HONOR has been swept to the wayside.

I heard pundits on none other than MSNBC saying the NYT made a big mistake. The NYT had just opened the door for full discussion on ALL of Bill’s indiscretions. Indeed, yesterday I heard a radio host discussing Bill’s 26-27 plane trips to pedophile island. And so it begins.
Theresa brex says
Please don’t forget that Donald trump is freinds with Epstein. He visited him in his palm beach home, on his plane and island.
According to Virginia Roberts there were photos of naked underage girls in all those places.
And Katie Johnson states trump had sex with her when she was only 13 yes old on Epstein’s island.
Combine that with what trump has said about ivanka and tiffany: he could be a pedophile too.
Clinton’s and trump great friends. Both covered in slime.
Justin W says
Politicians are treated differently than regular citizens. If not, many of us would be facing lawsuits from President Obama. I don’t think Donald would have any success in court on a libel suit at the current time. He’s creating a tempest in a teapot about this event. It will grab a few news cycles and then he and the NY Times will move on.

The New York Times and Hiiary are great together. They both lie, cheat and steal and hurt all the honest American citizens they can to accomplish their greedy goal in life. As a Veteran I really did not believe that these type of people existed in the Country that I fought for. Especially a woman who wants to be President so bad, that it doesn’t not matter that her Husband was a draft dodger and would rather have sex with a intern in the White House and to have a wife who hopes to be elected President evidently see’s nothing wrong with it. I was once a Democrat, until I grew up and learn what a decent person was and what a Democrat really is. I could go on for ever talking about all the rotten, slimy Democrats that have helped to destroy America, but there is not enough time in one lifetime to do that. If you could imagine, l am one very upset American citizen and Veteran that Prays that the American people will wake up and once again smell the roses.
debdell says
The democrat voters are less intelligent than their republican counter parts, but don’t lose sight of the fact that the corrupt establishment elite globalists own both parties and the entire election process is a sham. We have never been a government of and for the people. Our government is a dictatorship with a dog and pony show election system to give us the illusion of voting. This became evident after watching the election the USA setup in Iraq. The most important election is the selection of the nominees and that is totally owned by the establishment – until now. They have never had the perfect storm candidate run before “Trump”. For one small sliver in history, the illusion of choice has become a reality, but Trump is not in office yet and has not accomplished completion of any benefit for the people that goes against the corrupt establishment, such as building the wall and deporting the illegals. If the corrupt establishment can not be beaten this time around then it will be game over for the people and America will continue down the death spiral.

When Donald Trump entered this political race he knew all the sleazy politics that he would be faced with “dished” out by the liberal media, the Democrats, Republicans, socialists, progressives and the rest of the motley crew. I guess you have not heard this yet. You did not see Trump as a “quitter! Trump luster is now gone. He has abandoned building the Wall, abandoned shipping all illegals; abandoned stopping rich Arabs coming here; abandoned his rhetoric with China and Japan and Russia. Like Bushes he may import jet engines from Japan and Russia. These could have been made here in Oshkosh Wisconsin. Trump luster is gone and I do not blame him for bailing out. After all GOPers hate Trump for being a White male born here. They prefer having Cruz, a foreigner as their man. TPs and Repubs are dangerous for this country.

I read that “smut piece” online Saturday. When someone posted it. Although it was full of negativity, I really read nothing out of the ordinary. For example; Mr. Trump was “smittened” with a beautiful young lady. Hiw many MEN out there haven’t been?
Secondly, she “…was invited to a pool party!” When the ‘host’ was informed she “…hand not brought a swim suit!” He offered her one! Big deal. There wasn’t even a mention in the article where there was “…an unwelcome advance.”
I could go on, yet won’t!
On monday morning, the “LADY” in question came out and disputed what the (lying) NYT’s had written.
I agree, He should band together with the lady in question and both of them sue the heck outta the Times!

It take a long time to see the globalist agenda develop , but ever since Jimmy opened the flood gates to all those that there government wanted to get rid of. they came in droves and many to old to go to school to learn our history, and assimilate into our culture. Instead we had a lot of brain dead elected and unelected start pandering to those from country’s ,that there governments that didn’t want or need. The mistake or maybe it was planed, was not to require them to take classes to help them assimilate to a country, that didn’t have the murderous fascist dictators, from where they came. It now seems it was an elite fascist plan to get rid of a countries sovereignty and create a fascist world without sovereignty.
Constitutionalist says
i agree; sue anyhow. The young lady in question might just enjoy a large payday! (Trump may not need it, but i’d be willing to wager that SHE does!)
Arthur Hartsock says
C’mon, Mr. Constitutionalist, political candidates can’t sue every time a sleazy newspaper says something slightly dishonest about them. You know, just like Donald did when he attacked his Republican rivals in the campaign?!! There are different rules for ordinary citizens then there are for political candidates like Mr. Trump. Like Truman said, “If you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen!!” They’re just getting started, Mr. Trump. Let’s limit the whining.
Constitutionalist says
Arthur-
“C’mon” right back atcha. You DO know that libeling someone is a Criminal act, subject to penalty, right? You’re also aware that a published untruth often BECOMES the truth, especially when unchallenged, right? (the legal maxim is something like “silence in the face of accusation implies assent”.)
Just because you’re a candidate for office does not make it lawful for anyone to lie in print about you – and, according to the alleged “victim” in these lies, what the Times is claiming took place never happened.
So Trump has offered a reasonable compromise; retract publicly, or be sued…based on recent precedent, potentially a multi-million dollar payday, should they not humble themselves and relent. There’s also a penalty associated with being stubborn jerks.
Tell me, Senor Hartsock, would someone lying in print about you, your daughter/son, wife, or mother be OK just because you’re running for a public office? No?
