The search continues for Petros Krommidas, a 29-year-old New York Democratic candidate for Nassau County Legislature, who vanished last Wednesday night from a Long Island beach.

Nassau County police said Krommidas was last seen around 9 p.m. on April 23 at his home in Baldwin, Long Island. His family reported him missing the following evening after he failed to respond to messages, which they described as “completely out of character for him.”

His family says Krommidas was doing a cold-water training swim for an upcoming triathlon.

“He locked his car, took a towel, and around 10:30 p.m. walked onto the beach to exercise, just as he had done many times before,” his family wrote in a social media post. “He has always been in great shape and was training for a triathlon. He was not a stranger to cold water training.”

Search crews discovered Krommidas’ locked car parked near the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach, where it appears he entered the water but never returned.

The family said that “search efforts have been ongoing, but we need the public’s help. Specifically, we need people to walk the beaches — focused between from Lido Beach to Riis Park — particularly during times of high tide.”

Police describe Krommidas as a 6’2″, 230-pound man with brown hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a camouflage print sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. Nassau County police indicated they do not suspect foul play in his disappearance.

Krommidas is running to represent Nassau County’s Fourth District, which includes Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, Oceanside and Bay Park. The seat is currently held by Republican Patrick Mullaney. Just two days before his disappearance, Krommidas had addressed the Nassau County Young Democrats’ monthly meeting ahead of the June 24 primary.

The former Columbia University student-athlete had worked in finance at Morgan Stanley and Sageview Capital before transitioning to politics as a Democratic Party field organizer in 2024.

The Nassau County Democratic Committee has been actively sharing information about his disappearance on social media. “Our friend and colleague Petros Krommidas has been reported missing,” the committee posted. “Please share this information across all your social media platforms.”

Nassau County Democratic Committee Chairman Jay Jacobs spoke on behalf of the party in a statement to NBC 4.

“We are heartbroken over the disappearance of Petros Krommidas. Petros is a bright, driven young man who has been a strong voice for Democratic values. He is well respected by the community and represents the very best of our next generation of leaders,” Jacobs statement said. “We are keeping Petros and his family in our prayers and remain hopeful for his safe return.”

Police continue to ask anyone with information on Krommidas’ whereabouts to contact the Nassau County Police Department Missing Persons Squad.
