Fox News boss Rupert Murdoch says that he wants to keep anchor Megyn Kelly at the network, but if she decides to leave “we have a deep bench of talent, many of whom would give their right arm for her spot.”
Murdoch, in an interview published in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, also said that Fox News Channel hopes to keep Bill O’Reilly on the air in prime-time and that he doesn’t foresee major changes in the network’s direction after the Nov. 8 election.
Murdoch speaking publicly at this stage of negotiations to keep Kelly at Fox News was perhaps more startling than what he actually said. Murdoch has been chief executive at Fox following Roger Ailes’ departure this summer amid sexual harassment allegations, and is vice chairman of its parent company 21st Century Fox.
Kelly’s contract is up next year. But Fox would like to map out its future sooner rather than later, perhaps even settling Kelly’s status before the Nov. 15 publication of her book, “Settle For More,” for which she is expected to do promotional interviews.
Murdoch, who is a major stockholder in the Wall Street Journal, told the newspaper that he’d like to sign Kelly very soon. “It’s up to her,” he said.
A spokeswoman for Kelly did not immediately return messages on Thursday.
“I don’t remember the last time that the head of a major company went on the record to talk about a major negotiation with anything other than very banal comments,” said David Westin, a Bloomberg TV anchor and former president of ABC News.
Most such negotiations — and Westin has conducted several of them — take place in secrecy because that allows both sides to speak frankly and not tip off potential competitors, he said.
Westin declined to do so, but it led to immediate speculation about what sort of message was being sent to Kelly and anyone else at Fox in a post-Ailes world.
One possible message to her agents: It’s time to make a decision, and maybe you’re not worth as much as you think.
Kelly has been a central story in the election campaign, most recently this week. Former House Speaker and Fox contributor Newt Gingrich accused Kelly of being “fascinated with sex” when a Tuesday night interview about sexual misconduct allegations made against Donald Trump took a wrong turn.
Kelly has cultivated a reputation for toughness and a willingness to challenge conservative orthodoxy. Trump unleashed social media attacks on her last year after being angered by a debate question she asked about his attitude toward women, and boycotted a later Fox debate because of her presence as a moderator.
While she’s earned respect for standing up for herself, Kelly has also alienated some conservatives and Trump fans who are an important part of Fox’s audience. But at 45, Kelly is also seen as a key cog in the post-Ailes lineup at Fox, and losing her would be a public relations blow.
It’s not clear what else she would like to do in television, and who would sign her at the price tag she is likely to command from Fox. Kelly hosted a prime-time interview show on the Fox broadcast network last spring — Trump was one of the subjects — but it was not considered a success. She’s signed on as a guest host on Kelly Ripa’s syndicated talk show for the day after the election.
Ratings during the past couple of weeks, during a particularly hot time for cable news, show Kelly is a commanding but not necessarily dominant presence.
She beat her time period competitors, Anderson Cooper at CNN and Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, in viewership on seven of the past 10 nights for which ratings were available, the Nielsen company said. She had a built-in advantage: “The Kelly File” is preceded by O’Reilly’s show, which consistently delivers a bigger audience.
Yet in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic used as a basis for advertising sales by news networks, Kelly beat both of her competitors only once in 10 nights. Maddow won five times in the demo, and Cooper won four. Three times, Kelly finished behind both CNN and MSNBC in the demo.
There have been some suggestions that Fox would moderate its tone politically post-election and post-Ailes. In the Journal interview, Murdoch seemed to throw cold water on that idea.
“We’re not changing direction,” he said. “That would be business suicide.”

I too turn off Kelly. She is about as transparent as glass. She definitely pro Clinton. She is smart, and I think pretty and has achieved a certain amount of fame at FOX. Newt really got to her and her closing remark proved that to be true. I hope she leaves and goes to CNN or MSNBC. She will not be missed. If she stays at FOX, their ratings for that hour will take a nose dive, if they have not already. Then let’s see how interested FOX is in keeping her. Meghan Kelly needs to go. I have never understood the attraction to her, either by Fox or the public. She is not a good journalist and is not “fair and balanced” as the network advertises. The exchange with Newt the other day was terrible. She should have been taken off the air until she can have some training on what her job should be.

I was paying $100 a month for direct tv to keep fox news. Thanks to fox for toting hillary’s line, I just had direct tv shut off and am saving $100 a month. I hate the time gap between O’Reilly and Hannity. I switch channels, take a shower, walk the dog, or just anything to avoid “Kelly Kontact.” She is vicious and evil. I wish Hannity followed Bill O’Reilly and my life would be so much better. I am a woman and I respect all of the other female Fox anchors and journalists, but Megah is hard to stomach.

I wrote and called the Fox News Station two days ago. I encouraged them not to keep MK. I believe she is no longer truly reporting news. She has become too emotionally involved and I believe she has crossed over to the other side. I believe in fighting for and using our voices for women’s rights… for all people’s rights but, she has become smurky and just outright rude. May we all continue to pray for our nation as we approach this very historical day in our history…November 8th…may we continue those prayers after the elections!!!

If Trump loses, many conservatives are likely to begin blaming those who they see as people who helped make that possible. Megyn will be on that list. Going forward there is going to be a large part of the population who is going to look for a source that will report every moral lapse of President Hillary Rotten Clinton. If Megyn refuses to do so she will be demonized and her ratings are likely to plummet.

I thought Megyn’s question to Donald at the first debate was a little mean spirited in the way she asked it, but respected her right to do it. But then she never let it go. Then when Hillary’s campaign came out with the access Hollywood audio, Megyn was just way to gleeful to see this happening to him. That’s when I said “enough”. I watch Fox News all the time, but now at 9pm I switch over to One America News for the hour.
It sounds like many conservatives who used to watch Megyn no longer do so, so Rupert honey, you and Megyn’s other dozen fans go right ahead and watch her!
Fox News would be better off without her. She doesn’t respect her guests, argues with them to the point of being rude, only she is right about issues and she exudes arrogance every time she speaks. We have stopped watching her since she tried to take down Donald Trump. She used to be good and we looked forward to her program. She had interesting stories and exposed hidden facts and seemed to be on the side of the viewers. Now she seems to be only on her own side….more like MSNBC or CNN. We watch Lou Hobbs, O’Reilly, Trish Regan, Neil, Stuart Varney and Judge Jenine, of course. Murdoch is right….there is lots of talent who could easily take her place.

I started to dislike MK when she laughed mockingly at Dinesh D’Souza for expressing the view that, compared to most black men, Obama had enjoyed a rather privileged life before he got into politics. Dinesh is a fine man and I found her condescension inappropriate and offensive.

Welcome to the “FOX, CNN hour starting Megan Kelly”. I cannot watch Megan, she is one mean lady and I would rather watch Anderson Cooper than her. I don’t understand why, with her political leaning she is given a prime time slot. When FOX aired I had a satellite service that did not carry them, so I dropped their service and signed up with another satellite carrier, and have been a loyal follower ever since. I have Comcast now, and have enjoyed the many programs offered by FOX over the years, but Megan is not one of them. Obama has looked at ways he could use the FCC to shut FOX down and I wonder if Megan was hired to appease the Administration. Advertisers are getting a bad deal since her audience is shrinking.
