It’s been 20 years since the death of Princess Diana rocked the world. But now her bodyguard is saying it all could’ve been prevented.
Ken Wharfe served as Diana’s personal protection officer from 1987 to 1993.
The 68-year-old spoke to Australia’s Now To Love Wednesday about his time spent with Diana, and his opinion on how the crash could’ve been prevented.

“The biggest flaw was not reaching out for assistance. You can never go it alone on these things and with an operation like this in a foreign city, protecting the most famous person in the world at that time [you need back-up].”
According to Wharfe, following her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana’s security team was seriously cut down.
He said the team used to “spend hours preparing the exact execution of her outings.”
“The local police were not engage, the British embassy was not engaged, you had a chauffeur who was not a chauffeur, he was a security adviser within the Ritz hotel and an alcoholic. There was no proper liaison with Diana and [her boyfriend] Dodi Fayed about how they were going to escape the paparazzi, no one had talked to the press.”

He acknowledged that the usual protocol of protection for Diana was absent on the day of her death.
“All these basic things that we did on a daily basis over a number of years are proven and a well-tried system of protection that never failed. And yet none of these things were done!”
He claimed that had they followed traditional protocol, Henri would of not been allowed to drive the car and attempt to evade the paparazzi on his own. There would’ve been a scheduled photo opportunity, preventing the chaos that led to his reckless driving.
It’s an upsetting realization to know that Diana’s death should have, and could have easily been prevented.
