The presidential candidates have argued their differing opinions countless times throughout the election. But there is one issue in particular causing a lot of controversy this campaign cycle.
The Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership (TPP) has been strongly opposed by Republican nominee Donald Trump, similar to his opinion on the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, while Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has consistently flip-flopped.
What exactly is the TPP? It is a free trade agreement negotiated by the Obama administration between the U.S. and 11 Pacific Rim countries. It erases most tariffs with countries like Japan, Australia and Malaysia, while expanding on trade deals through NAFTA with Canada and Mexico. The deal represents one-third of the world’s trade and nearly 40 percent of the global economy.
After seven years of negotiations, the deal was signed on February 4th, 2016 — but it has yet to be ratified.
That means it’s up to the presidential candidates to decide it’s fate.
Trump has vocalized his opposition to TPP since the beginning of his candidacy, calling the deal, “insanity.” He criticized the deal for not accounting for currency manipulation, which he says is, “the number-one weapon used by foreign countries to hurt the United States and take away jobs.”
Trump has said he would squash the deal as president, and instead negotiate with individual countries.
Clinton’s opinion on the TPP is much more complicated. While serving as secretary of state, Clinton praised Obama, saying the deal “sets the gold standard in trade agreements.”
She claims to have changed her mind during a fall debate with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, saying she now opposes the deal, and reiterated that statement at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night.
Critics say it is no surprise she can’t make up her mind on TPP, because she had the exact same flip-flop attitude when it came to NAFTA. She praised the agreement when her husband signed it into law, but then flipped, calling it a mistake in 2008.
With the major public opposition to TPP as of late, Clinton maintains her opposition to it. But there is fear she may again change her mind if elected president.

That will only be achieved through individual agreements with countries, and companies, not some one size fits all concept.

First, a correction: NAFTA is North American Free Trade Agreement, and should not be confused with NATO, which is North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
On to the deal.
Since it was negotiated by the Obama regime, I wonder how it can be a gold standard for America. This is a regime that has always done things that are not in the best interests of America; they continuously put America last. The less they do, the better off America is.
My opinion is the major parts of the deal were negotiated by industry insiders, to gain special advantages for the businesses which are paying them. Which is what I would expect. So that would guarantee that there are some winners and some losers in the deal.
My only care about the deal is that it would guarantee access to the ASEAN nations for American products and services, to the detriment of other nations. We have helped these others out too much; let them work their own deals.
Yes, Trump has said some idiotic comments. Have you seen the ad on tv that runs constantly of all the dumb things he has said? Then the democrats say “our children are watching”. If they are so concerned about what our children see, why would they run this commercial over and over. Our children are still watching. I guess we need to teach our children to lie, cheat, kill, rape and get rid of anyone that gets in our way or pay them off like those wholesome Clintons. Hmmmm!

I would vote for the White House Janitor than corrupt Hillary. I’m sure he is more truthful,more honest and a real patriotic, compared to Hillary. This election is much more than Dems.and Reb. This election is about the future of our Country, more of the failed policies, or a whole new start! Not since Lincoln has the country became more divided, which is why we must all think of our future and which direction we wish our country to take and become again! If you make the choice of unemployment, high debt, more division, and little chance of ever getting out of the rut we are in, no country respecting us then vote for more of the same! At least they are going head to head on an actual issue where there can be discussion as to which one is right and which one is wrong. We need more open discussion on other real issues as well. All this name calling and shouting about how great or how terrible one or the other is gets us nowhere. And as an astute manager once said: If you don’t like my idea, present me with a better one. This is fine and good but don’t forget this is not a one issue election.
Most of the attention in this Presidential race is on Trump and Clinton. But Gary Johnson will have an impact on who is elected. For example among active duty military personnel Mr. Johnson leads in one national poll. And his major promise is removal of all US Forces from the Middle East. So the ones doing the fighting are heavily supporting Johnson. Something to consider. Don’t just pay attention to the top two candidates.
