President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to build a wall and make Mexico pay for in, and “build the wall” chants echoed in Trump rallies leading up to the 2016 presidential election.
But the president-elect’s tough-talking plan to rein in illegal immigration showed signs of cracking on Sunday, with Trump indicating he’s willing to compromise part of his vow to build a solid wall along the southern U.S. border.
In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Trump said Sunday he would accept a fence in some places along the U.S. southern border, but in other places he would build an actual wall.
During his campaign he insisted he would deport millions of people living in the country illegally, with exceptions. And in his first television interview since winning the presidential election, Trump said he’s willing to deport or incarcerate 2 million to 3 million people living in the country illegally who “are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers.”
However, earlier Sunday House Speaker Paul Ryan told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “we are not planning on erecting a deportation force.” Ryan said “I think we should put people’s minds at ease” on mass deportation because the top priority is really border security.
Nearly 700 miles of fencing was put in place during President George W. Bush’s second term.
The fencing is placed largely in urban areas along the nearly 2,000-mile frontier. It is not the type of solid wall that Trump has pledged to construct at Mexico’s expense. The fence has miles-long gaps and gates built in to allow landowners access to their property on the south side of the fencing. Immigrants have been known to go over and around the fence.

First, ICE and the Border Patrol should be allowed to do their jobs. Next we should cut off any welfare, food stamps, healthcare, housing support, etc. given to illegal aliens. No more free breakfast, lunch and dinner to the children of the illegal aliens who have the temerity to put their children in our schools … and if they can’t produce a birth certificate showing that the child is an American citizen, they shouldn’t be allowed to register anyway. Also, if the child of non-citizens happens to be born in this country, that should not confer automatic citizenship. Fines for those who employ illegals should be tripled. Once all these steps are in place, there will be a lot fewer to deport. Those who are stupid enough to brag about their illegal status on Facebook or on television should immediately be picked up and put on a plane home. Slowly but surely the $100B/year they cost the people of the U.S. will go down. We may not even have to build a wall. Who is going to overstay their visa if they can’t get a job, they can’t get food stamps, and no one is giving them money on which to live? They’ll have no choice but to go home and put the same degree of effort they do in trying to steal from us into making their own countries places they’ll want to live.

Either build a wall or mine the entire border in a strip 1/2 mile wide with a good many land mines then put a sign in English and Spanish on a fence on the Mexican side and one on the American side that spells out its a mine field. these mines need to have a trigger that if someone try’s to tunnel under it will set off the mines as well. We also could put drones in the air to report any one trying to work though the mine field with a knife so when they come out in American the Border patrol is waiting for them for a trip back.

I agree with all of this and would like to add my support to a speech Theodore Roosevelt made in 1907 regarding immigration. He said we welcome all immigrants to this country so long as they assimilate themselves to the culture, beliefs, and lifestyles and the language (English) of this country and of the citizens of this country. That they have one flag (The US Flag) and support it alone without also supporting other countries flags. That they learn and abide by the Constitution of the United States and agree to all Ammendments and support this country. Then and only then should they be allowed to stay in this country and become naturalized citizens. In regards to their children being born in the US, I believe a mandatory waiting period of 10 months naturalized in the US prior to the birth of children should be required for the child’s US citizenship to be established and jobs established for them to pay their own medical expenses the same as we have to. They should get equal treatment to natural born Americans–not better than us. Financial aid for their education should be balanced and equal to what Americans are receiving educational grants.

I agree 100% with the above comment. After all “Trespassing” is a crime, isn’t it? There should also be an agreement with the countries of origin (of illegals) how to deal with their citizens who are caught. It is not fair for those who waited for long years to be able to come to the United States legally and paid the required fees to apply for immigration and become residents, to just allow those “trespassers” to stay without consequence. I also agree with the plan to help resettle those who left their own countries due to war or other reasons that endanger their lives. There should be a way to enforce the laws with compassion.

As far as the wall, it could be a tall fence like the ones surrounding the prisons. It seems to do a good job of detaining the prisoners. . I don’t know the solution to the tunnels they dig though. Surely with all the technology, there is a way to detect activity below the ground. I don’t mind… legal… immigrants entering the country but we do need to know they are here. When I travel, I have a passport or a visa. But I don’t receive any benefits offered from the country I am visiting other than enjoying the history, culture and beauty.

I agree on enforcement of the present laws and putting more teeth into the bite by giving the border guards better weapons and more lookout towers as well as drones to track and destroy targets. Building a wall sounds like a great idea, but my bet is that within a year of completion that wall will be riddled with tunnels, hundreds if not a thousand of them. In effect, the wall will be more decorative that useful.

The money, for most of this border protection, was already allocated in the “Secure Fence Act” of 2006…. Passed in the House AND Senate by overwhelming majorities, and signed into law by President Bush.

I saw a comment the other day that compared our country to Disney World – “Everybody wants to come here…” Well, I have news for these folks. If you enter Disney World and don’t go through proper channels (buy a ticket), you are removed from the Park…it’s simple! If you go to the movies without purchasing a ticket, they remove you. If you enter Mexico illegally, they throw you in jail.
It’s pretty simple. Maybe we need to review our immigration system and make it a bit easier for people to enter legally and become citizens (but not without pledging allegiance to our nation). But, we are still a nation of laws and should abide by them.
Our new president should see that our border patrol people are able to do their duty instead of just ignoring all the people coming here. You’ll notice there isn’t a stream of people wanting to leave, is there?
Except for a few special cases (foreigners married to American citizens, for instance), we should only start bringing foreigners into the U.S. after we are properly caring for all Americans who can’t take care of themselves, after our vets are receiving good care, after our infrastructure has been repaired and improved to the point that it can handle more people than current Americans, and after our schools have extra teachers hired to teach additional children (and NOT in their non-English native tongues).

Building the wall will do no good. The illegals will go through, under, or over the wall. The way to stop them is to use surveillance equipment to determine when they cross, and intercept them with Border Patrol agents, and enforce to the law on employers who employ illegals.
You are suggesting something sorta like the commercial on television: The bank is robbed, but the security guard says he can’t do anything but watch. Surveillance equipment will not put handcuffs on the illegals. Border Patrol agents can only watch when a flash mob runs across the border. They might catch some but many will get away. Those things need to be added to an impenetrable wall so the message is clear, the threat is slowed enough to make apprehension a reality.

Finish the wall. Be it physical or virtual. The open gaps are choke points that would do well with virtual coverage. The key will be to make sure the gaps are not so big that it will be impossible to cover even with virtual tech.

Just a couple of small points. Enough voltage to make their blood boil would almost certainly kill them. Although with electricity it is usually the amount of current that flows through your body and the path that it takes that determines if you will be killed. But there will be no current without the voltage being applied. A fence similar to the one in the Jurassic Park movie would work pretty well. Enough juice to knock you back on you keister if you so much as touch it or even get just a little too close would seem like about the right amount. but you need a backup power supply in case of a hurricane or tornado or some such.

Charge Mexico a $0.50 tariff for each product sold in the US, this should pay for the fence in a month. Charge the Mexican government $1,000 for each illegal caught in the U.S. this too should pay for the fence in about a month. Case closed, fence built and no more problems. If I can figure it out than why can’t the politicians? The U.S. doesn’t owe Mexico a dime.

The following has been my opinion for a very long time – Trump does not need to build a wall – our United States military needs to be brought home immediately from the Middle East and they need to be redeployed along the Mexican border with constructed buildings every 20 miles or so to house the military – these military personnel would patrol the land between each building with barbed wire and dogs along with drones and other observational means. When those trying to enter the United States are apprehended then the families are to be broken up ( separated ) from one another and handed over to Sherriff Joe who will be granted a large amount of money to enhance his detainment camps to house the illegals for some period of time before being sent back to Mexico. There is a problem with bringing home all American troops – THAT being that the USA has many investments & interests in those countries and America needs to protect these interests from being STOLEN. Which is what has been happening. Many American $$ have been invested in foreign countries in an attempt to “lift” the standard of living through employment opportunities, etc. Much of the oil industry would not be in those foreign countries if not for American investment.
Up to a point I agree with you. However,I still think the military in the short run and a vastly improved border patrol in the future is needed to keep the illegals out. I am not a xenophobe so I have no problem with people coming in legally to find work, as long as some form of tax is paid for the privilege. No one .rides for free.
We have elected a President and not dictator want a be. As President he must keep his oath of office and abide by the Constitution. Weather it is a physical wall, a virtual wall, or something else the main point is that our boarders must be secured against all kinds of illegal activities be it invasion by foreign nationals, gunning running, smuggling, infiltration by potential terrorists or anything else. The first thing that a President can do is to ensure that existing laws are enforced and that there are the necessary assets to do so. The construction of an actual physical wall will require the cooperation of and legislation by Congress.
As to foreign nationals currently illegally residing in the United States: Well they should have any federal welfare or other financial sustenance cut off. And any that are involved in criminal activities must be turned over to immigration authorities for repatriation to their native homeland. Anyone attempting to interfere with the rule of law should be charged with obstruction. The rest is up to Congress.
I would say, build a wall where possible, put fences in parts if necessary, and PATROL THE WHOLE BORDER WITH DRONES SECURITY LIGHT BEAMS AND ALARMS PLACED THROUGHOUT…….BORDER PATROL WOULD PROBABLY APPRECIATE SOME TECHNOLOGY WHICH THEY CAN THEN MONITOR.
Let’s compromise by adding and aiding border patrol to do their jobs and return the incarcerated illegals back to Mexico. Let’s cut off subsidizing the “undocumented and “unvetted” immigrants and put money back into the Social Security fund from which it was raided. Give tax-payor Social Security recipients more than 3/10ths of one percent increase, which in my case comes out to about $5 a month. I worked and paid taxes for 40 years but these “political” and “economic” refugees $2,000+++ per month in assistance to help them get established. WTH!
It is not complicated, Build a barrier of somekind ,part wall, fence ,trench, hot wire , and motion sensors. Build halfway houses to process the ones here that want to become legal and to have them register in the inner cities that have high immigrant populations , and it will save time rather than trying to deport many of them which is going to be nearly impossible as to the shear numbers.They must come in , register, receive work permits, and tax status and have a brief grace period or be deported. A little honey will get more compliance or they will go underground and it will take alot of manpower to round them up.
We should build a wall like the Great Wall of China. There is plenty of building materials. Build it 50 feet high and have soldiers or the National Guard posted on it every couple of hundred feet. It should also be patrolled by armed drones. There should also be seismic sensors all along the border. The guardsmen could fire a warning shot first and then send in the drones if need be.
It was a campaign promise to build the wall. If it is not built, he will lose the respect of the people that voted for him. Please carry through with the campaign promises.

I am Canadian and I am so glad that the people of the USA vote for Trump and was able to see the evil in the Clinton family and Obama organization. The wall is not the way to go. Electronic surveilence and more manpower will work better. A wall big enough to circumvent traffic over/under it would cost a tremendous fortune.

I think that the illegals have been way too creative in overcoming the barriers erected so far, so I think they don’t work. Things like that would likely reduce the flow of illegals by a large amount.Roll back drug laws to about 1900 AD when most of the drugs now sold illegally could be obtained legally at any corner pharmacy.and the drugs so obtained would be pure and unadulterated so that folks didn’t die from ingesting toxic substances used to cut them (although overdoses would still be possible which,although sad, would be a result of someone exercising their right to choose and not some crooks cheating ways. . A wall or a fence makes no difference because most illegal immigrants make their way in by overstaying the tourist visas. Yes there is a lot of Hispanics in US but most are citizens born in Puerto Rico or in the stolen lands from Mexico and their descendants. Many are Dominicans born in Puerto Rico and Cuban expatriate and their descendants. We cannot be deported. Obama has done a good job deporting people loyal to Hillary (with and without criminal record) and Mexico has done a good job keeping Central Americans at the other side of its border with Guatemala. Helping other countries to have solid economies will help to keep immigrants there. Yes there are bad people but most of them are descendants of the British, the Irish, the Germans, the Italians and other Europeans.

Okay, we won the presidential election and have put a good man in office. The eight year nightmare is almost over. But we still need to be vigilant. In the past we’ve elected too many Republicans who were mostly neocon phonies who weren’t interested in protecting our borders. I pray that President Trump will make good on his promise to put a stop to illegal immigration. And as for the cities who have decided that they’re going to continue breaking the law by staying as sanctuary cities, not only should they be defunded by the federal govt., their mayors should be imprisoned for breaking the immigration laws of this country.

I’ve glanced almost all your comments by this time and I can understand all your feelings. But people, like you, with comments just 2%. “Yes, we need to secure the boards” 93,54%. Finally, “No, there is room for compromising” 4,46%. If half of them rather votes for the security of our board, there are 2,2% in the rest -almost nothing. So we can see almost common agreement.
Question is, how to use this agreement? How to convert it in the power, and help to our Trump to stay strongly on his position? I believe mostly in 2% of people with comments, that, as I see, can express own feelings and ideas with their words. I pretty sure that we have to hear many reasonable things from other voters. Now, what I think by myself about this problem? 1. We need the meetings to combine our efforts. Why left liberal idiots can protest against Trump by thousands, and we haw to remain silent? A combination wall and fence where appropriate. There should be large numbers of sentinel towers built at properly spaced intervals from where spotting illegals would be facile. These towers should be equipped with the latest in modern surveillance and weapons technologies. President Trump – THE President (hallelujah!) – should also employ drones to constantly monitor the perimeter. The drones should be weapon-ready to shoot at the calves of any who somehow manage to breach the perimeter. President Trump – THE President (hallelujah!) – should arrrange to hire ample border patrol officers. President Trump – THE Presiident (Hallelujah!) should arrange to equip each BP station, sentinel tower and all border patrol officers on foot with proper electronics, appropriate weapons and night vision equipment to easily spot those miscreants. And that would also make for job creation! There is no need for holding cells. Those that breach should be handed over to the Mexican government for incarceration, etc. US dollar outlay for processing the breachers back to Mexico should be minimal. BP officers should be well compensated!
It is great to have a plan wall or fence, but what ever it is the Border patrol has to be allowed to do their job without fear of retaliation in the event someone gets shot or hurt in the process. Also the residents that live in the proximity maybe won’t have to be nearly afraid of being broken into or worse murdered and all of that has happened. Get a plan post haste , deport , build the wall or a substantial fence, let border guards do their jobs by whatever means necessary .
