Last week’s protests over a black man shot by police in Charlotte, North Carolina became an ugly scene of violence and destruction.
Now, new evidence suggests that may have all been for nothing.
Keith Lamont Scott had a restraining order filed against him a year ago when he threatened to kill his wife and her son with an illegal gun, according to court documents obtained Tuesday.
That’s right — the police were aware that Scott, a registered felon, had a history of violence and an unregistered firearm.

Scott’s wife, Rakeyia Scott filed the order on Oct. 5th 2015, which told law enforcement officers who encounter him should be aware that he “carries a 9mm black” gun.
She checked boxes on the form informing law officers who would serve the restraining order that her husband had neither a permit issued by a county sheriff to buy a handgun nor a state permit to carry a concealed handgun, which requires a criminal background check. She said he worked as a mall security guard.
She sought to keep her husband away because “he hit my 8 year old in the head a total of three times with his fist,” she said in the restraining order document. “He kicked me and threaten to kill us last night with his gun, he said he is a ‘killer’ and we should know that.”
When deputies went to serve the restraining order two days after it was filed, Scott had already moved to South Carolina, where he has family. About a week after that, Rakeyia Scott filed a separate court notice voluntarily dismissing the order, saying: “He is no longer a threat to me and my family.”
This recent knowledge alters the image many people have been pressing of Scott.
He is no longer perceived as an innocent black man at the wrong place at the wrong time, but rather a gun-toting criminal whose own family feared for their lives around him at times.
Police have said Scott had a handgun when they approached him at an apartment complex last week. Officers told Scott repeatedly to drop the weapon and he was shot to death when he didn’t follow their orders, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief has said.
The city police also said they found Scott’s DNA and fingerprints on a handgun recovered at the scene, and that he was wearing an ankle holster when he was killed.
Police released a photo of a small, black handgun they said was recovered from the scene of Scott’s shooting on Sept. 20. Police have not described the gun in detail, but printing on the side of the barrel said it was a Colt Series 80 Mustang .380 caliber, which shoots a 9mm bullet, according to Steven Howard, a firearms consultant in Lansing, Michigan, who has testified as an expert witness in court cases.
It’s not clear if the gun mentioned in the restraining order is the same one police said they recovered.
The gun recovered by police had been stolen and later sold to Scott, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police source told The Associated Press on Monday. The person insisted on anonymity because the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
State agent Erik Hooks declined comment when asked whether the gun had been stolen.
Scott has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina. Texas records showed he was convicted of evading arrest with a vehicle in 2005, and several months later, of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police Chief Kerr Putney has said officers were looking for another suspect when they spotted Scott with marijuana and a gun in an SUV and decided to engage him.

As a former law enforcement officer, both city, county and federal, I do know of what I speak, most often, young black men and women, would rather be combative then being in compliance.
The age old question is…….why are these people so combative and do they really think that they will win that “fight” that they seem to be looking for?
Just a guess – could it be that they are not as removed in time from very primitive African lifestyles as Anglos and Asians are, and so sometimes reflexively revert to primitive behavior when under stress, rather than doing the civilized thing and complying?
I believe that their are some bad cops who shouldn’t be cops. Whether it be that they think their position is a license to bully or if they got hired over others because they fit into an affirmative action category. However, I find it curious that a demographic that in many cities, commits crime at sometimes more than triple their population percentage, complains that they have dealings with the police.

The thugs think they are bigger then the law and are more likely to kill other blacks along with any whites they feel like murdering, so want respect? Some populations do seem to be fond of doing certain things. In Texas, 80% of child molestation is perpetrated by hispanics, some of whom are illegal aliens.
I suspect that the police would shoot a white suspect who wouldn’t drop his gun, too – they aren’t willing to be killed by a suspect just because he/she is white! And that begs the question: Why is it that whites don’t seem to be pulling guns out in the presence of police?

I don’t see how different training could have changed most of these incidents, except possibly that one in (New York?) during which the suspect was strangled to death.

That being said, it would probably be useful to have a Federal Police Commission to hear controversial cases that involve shooting a suspect…a neutral panel, not connected to the Police Station/Region involved. I give you credit for the idea, however, it would be better if the review board were citizens. After 25 years as a State Trooper and having delt with the Federal government (FBI and the like) I would say a civilian panel would work if properly informed by the Police Department which I have no reason to believe they would do otherwise!!!

The gun being described shoots an American cartridge known as the 380 ACP , also known as the 9mm short (in Italy it’s known as the 9mm Corto, in Germany as the 9mm Kurt. All three of these ‘short’ 9mm versions are exactly the same cartridge (with slight possible bullet weights) and are interchangeable for use in any of the named cartridge barrels/Guns. I for one am glad to live in a country where we have the right to protest things that we feel are unjust, but wouldn’t it be nice to wait until all of the facts are presented and see if that protest is justified. Even if indisputable evidence were to be presented to citizens of Charlotte, their false perceptions of being a “victim of police discrimination and violence” would prevent them from seeing the reality of the situation. Let’s get this straight. This is the same wife that filed this report that was on television with her own video saying he does not have a gun, and family stating he is a father of 7 carrying only a book. Then she needs to have a warrant for her arrest, because that was a false report that she made to the police last year.
These people are causing problems because they want lawsuits won on their behalf. If there is no money allowed to be involved in these cases it will all go away just saying.
I live just north of Charlotte and have followed this entire story closely. Immediately after the shooting the blacks all were screaming that it was a white cop that shot Scott. (WHY should it even matter? white cops outnumber black cops greatly) So let’s look at the facts:
1)- It was a BLACK police officer who shot Scott
2)- The Chief of Police of Charlotte is a BLACK man.
3)- The investigator who analyzed the videos was a BLACK man who stated Scott absolutely had a gun, and now we know this man had two restraining orders against him by his wife! Plus he hit an eight year old child with his fist… he’s called a “Family Man” by friends and family- I guess they can smell the money.
Thankfully his wife actually was there as the police were trying to arrest Scott and she was videoing it, it shows multiple police officers (one black) all with weapons drawn and and all of them are screaming repeatedly to “drop the gun” The wife is also yelling at the cops and at Scott, She yells at Scott early on in the video “Don’t do it Scott!… Don’t do it Scott!” The only logical explanation is that she means don’t try shooting the officers.
I don’t know if this video is available anywhere on the net but Time Warner Cable news in Charlotte was showing it a couple of days ago, I think the wife may have had a guilt trip and and just put it out there because she is living a LIE, but its pretty incriminating evidence and the lawyer probably had them pull it. Either that or the wife is extremely stupid! Unfortunately she will get millions of dollars of our hard earned tax dollars, simply because she is black. We in San Diego California just had a guy shot by the police yesterday. It should be noted that the media kept saying how there was a protest gathering and they put some fat girl on screen saying how the cops did not need to shoot the mentally damaged guy because he just didn’t need to get shot. Then they put some young guy on that said he saw the whole thing and the guy had his hands up when he got shot. The video shows the guy holding what looked like a gun with his hands clasped in a shooting combat stance. It is obvious to me that the media was doing all they could to get some kind of riot started. The gathering was a bunch of lookie-lous. All states should pass laws making it illegal (felonious) for anyone to demonstrate after nightfall and the same for anyone vandalizing private property. I also believe that any demonstrators committing acts of violence or vandalism that live more than 200 miles of the demonstration should be illegal as well. Keep in mind that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. NEVER NEVER NEVER demonstrated after dark for two reasons; 1- They were always peaceful. 2- They only demonstrated during daylight hours to garner support of the nation via news media. When I heard the wife’s recording I thought she was yelling at Scott “Don’t you do it!
