House Speaker Paul Ryan and President-elect Donald Trump have a complicated relationship for sure. But despite his refusal to endorse Trump for months, it looks like the two are playing nice — for now.
But is it a good idea, or a disaster waiting to happen?
Amid apparent signs of support from Trump, Ryan moved Tuesday toward winning approval from House Republicans to keep his job in the coming Congress. House Democrats, jarred by their meager Election Day gains, seemed less certain about their direction and delayed a vote on whether to keep Rep. Nancy Pelosi as minority leader.
At a private meeting of House GOP lawmakers, Wisonsin Rep. Ryan told them that in a morning conversation with Vice President-elect Mike Pence, Pence said he and Trump “are very supportive of the leadership team and are looking forward to working with them,” according to Wyoming Rep. Cynthia Lummis.
Lummis, a member of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus and who’s retiring in January, called Ryan’s remarks “a validating moment.”
Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, another member of the Freedom Caucus, said “Donald Trump controls whether Paul Ryan is the next speaker or not” and said “all the signals we have” are that the president-elect wants Ryan in the job.
Trump’s view on whether Ryan should keep his job was potentially decisive because his shockingly successful White House campaign stirred passionate support from many House Republicans’ constituents and helped many of them keep their seats.
Whether Trump would back or seek to oust Ryan was initially unclear after a campaign in which Ryan refused to work for his own party’s presidential candidate and frequently lambasted his comments about Hispanics and others. Trump returned the fire with caustic tweets about Ryan.
But since Trump’s Election Day victory, the president-elect visited Ryan at the Capitol and the two men have spoken frequently.
In addition, Ryan will have two powerful allies and old friends at the highest levels of the White House: Pence is a former House colleague and Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus, who will be chief of staff, is from Ryan’s home state of Wisconsin.
“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government,” Ryan told reporters Tuesday.
Ryan still faces possible opposition from members of the Freedom Caucus who think he may not push a starkly conservative agenda aggressively enough. He’s also been slammed by long-time Trump supporters upset that he refused to work for the president-elect during the campaign, and clashed frequently with him.
On the Democratic side, House Democrats postponed leadership elections that had been scheduled for Thursday until Nov. 30 amid signs of dissatisfaction with their veteran leaders. California Rep. Nacy Pelosi and No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland have led House Democrats for over a decade and are both in their seventies.
After what was a disastrous Election Day for Democrats, the party was on track to gain just six House seats at a time when they were hoping for more.
More than two dozen House Democrats wrote Pelosi this week asking her to delay the elections. They wrote that it is “vital that our caucus take the time to listen to the American people and learn the lessons of this difficult election.”
House Democrats made the decision to postpone their elections at a closed-door meeting Tuesday.
Next year will be the first that the GOP will have unfettered White House and congressional control since 2006. Republicans plan a 2017 agenda headlined by repealing and rewriting Obama’s health care law, cutting taxes and curbing federal regulations.
In a letter to administration officials, House GOP leaders warned them not to approve rules curbing oil and gas pollution during the waning days of Barack Obama’s presidency and said Congress would overturn them if they did.
Some opposition to Ryan remained.
Another Freedom Caucus member, Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador, said Monday that he expected Ryan to win the majority of Republicans needed Tuesday to be nominated. But he said “the rub comes” Jan. 3, when Ryan will need 218 votes — a majority of the full House — to be speaker and avoid a damaging setback to a career path that many think includes a presidential run.
With four races undecided, Republicans will likely have 241 seats next year. Democrats are certain to back their own leader, meaning no more than 23 Republicans could desert Ryan.
Senate Republicans and Democrats were meeting separately Wednesday to pick their leadership teams.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from Kentucky is keeping his job in a chamber that Republicans will control by 52-48. Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada is retiring after a 30-year Senate career and seems certain to be replaced by New York Sen. Chuck Schumer.

From what I’m reading/hearing Mr. Trump and Speaker Ryan agree on the most important issues. They agree on increased border security, tax reform (especially Corporate tax reform), extreme modification of health care law. Obviously there will be differences when it comes to exact details. But let’s give them a chance to do what’s best for America.
Trump knows Ryan is a RINO – as long as the bit is in Ryan’s mouth and the reigns are in Trumps hands the two are doing what is best to move the country forward. If Ryan tries to undercut Trump he will hear the famous words “You’re Fired”.

Trump, as President, has no say in who the speaker is. He doesn’t get a vote. He can make his preference known, but that is all. We did not elect and emperor but a President, who is SUPPOSED to have only limited power. The Congress is SUPPOSED to be the dominant branch, with the President holding veto power as a check on them, and the Supreme Court as the final arbiters on issues of constitutionality and application of the law. The President is not supposed to be able to make laws, not is SCOTUS. The executive has become too powerful only because the Congress has been too afraid to do their real job. They’ve let the Executive extend their laws via overreaching regulations until the country’s economy is suffering from the burden to compliance. That has to stop.
If we are going to drain the swamp, then a lot of illicitly established Federal departments need to be eliminated along with the bureaucrats running them. They are not needed, not wanted by the people, and waste our money.
The power of the President is found not in Executive Orders, but in regular executive control of his departments. Trump’s real power lies in his ability, as chief Executive, to shrink the size of government by eliminating whole departments and realigning responsibilities in others without any Congressional approval. If he wants to do so, he would be better off starting by not nominating certain Secretaries, because once they are confirmed by Congress, he cannot actually fire them without Congressional approval. If he does not nominate anyone for confirmation, he can dismantle the department at will. He could come close to eliminating the annual deficit by doing this and using the appropriations for those departments to pay down the debt. If some functions need to be retained, push them down to the states and let them fund them if they want.

There are three branches of government PLUS one, their minions (bureaucrats).
The Supreme Court (and subsequently lower courts) are making laws.
Congress is useless; they are bought and sold to the highest bidder, whether it be an outside special interest group or fellow Congressman/woman.
The President does what he/she wants with impunity. Congress has so many rules they can’t do anything. One can impeach and the other ignores the impeachment process.
Bureaucrats are free to do what they want. They run free and against the freedoms of the American people. A full 2/3 we could do without. They are governed by Civil Service Law and rules and regulations. They should be barred from unionization.
Such is life.

Dr. Redmond, I agree with you. Paul Ryan has already displayed his disloyalty. He has proven that he will cave in to pressure from the current POTUS. I believe that he has his own agenda that doesn’t necessarily represent his constituents or the citizens of this country. I simply don’t trust him. He may be smart, but there are others in the House who are smart, too. I pray that come January that he will be replaced by one who will follow the Constitution and will do the best for our country as a whole.

That nations people never received a dime to decrease their suffering. Accountability is required! Iran supports ISIS and others with money, weapons and equipment. ISIS’ mission is to destroy all who don’t convert to their way of thinking, including the U.S. The bottom line is that America MUST be considered first and foremost before we spend trillions of dollars to shore up others.

Dr. Redmond: I agree that the POTUS position on the Speaker is only recommending who he would like to see. He cannot officially fire him and select someone else. However, your point about the power currently exhibited by Obama using executive actions, is and should never have been his right. The problem with the structure of our national government, as you suggest, is not what the writers of the constitution envisioned. However, because of the lifetime appointments in our Federal Judicial system, many of these judges have taken it upon themselves to strike down actions by the voters, taken it upon themselves to bend the intent of the constitution and have in fact made laws merely through the use of precedents in court cases and determinations/intrepretations of the precedents. They should be held to a standard much higher than elected officials, because they are appointed for life and can affect the standards of law that the American people have to live with and under. Maybe it is time that the Federal Judges should have term limits at all levels of the Federal Judicial System!

I hope so. I’m a senior and don’t want Ryan messing with social security — it works just fine as it is, and is not destined to run out. Ryan is one of the Elite who wants us to think it is. Ryan can be fired in two ways. The Congress can vote for a new Speaker, and the Wisconsin voters in his district can vote Ryan out of office. Ryan isn’t just running with Trump’s bit in his mouth. He has an equal amount of power, and Trump knows it. For any of Trump’s plans to work he will need the full cooperation of Ryan and McCollum. Calling them RINOs doesn’t change that fact.

On two separate occasions Paul Ryan has sponsored legislation attempting to dismantle the self supporting Railroad Retirement System and convert it to Social Security. Rail employees and retirees pay a Tier I tax equivalent to Social Security and a Tier II tax above that permitting Railroad retirees a larger pension than Social Security Benefits.The majority of retirees will not be able to draw during a normal lifetime anywhere close to what Tier I and Tier II tax they paid in for many years. In my particular case over 43 years retirement paid for and earned through hard work and I resent Speaker Paul Ryan’s effort to steal Rail workers and retirees hard earned retirement pensions. He is part of the swamp that needs to be drained from Washington, DC

The election is over. I think Speaker Ryan has enough sense to know the people chose Donald Trump to be their president. Hopefully he will work with the president and Senate Majority Leader McConnell to get a lot of things accomplished during the next two years.
The Democrats need to move to a younger generation of mainstream leaders if they wish to remain relevant on the national level. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, and Elizabeth Warren represent an aging group of leaders whose radicalism is out of sync with most Americans. Ryan flip-flopped several times too many. The suggestion about putting him in the speaker slot until he demonstrates his loyalty is asinine. Look how hard it was to dislodge Boehner. No! Paul Ryan needs to go. No leadership positions for him at all, not even a committee chair.
In the Senate, Mitch McConnell has already shown his colors. The blue shows through the red in too many places. Many here are correct that he is a dyed-in-the-wool RINO. There aren’t many senators we can actually trust as true conservatives. As a veteran, I would have major heartburn giving any leadership position to McCain, who has been the worst obstructionist in Congress in getting benefits to veterans. Tim Scott might be an interesting choice for Senate leader if he would take the job, but there are a few other good choices as well.
It could be a necessary evil. Paul Ryan is NOT a friend of Trump, neither is he a Conservative Republican. But sometimes you have to work with what you got! I hope the deal works out for the US!
If I were Pres. Trump, I would be very wary of having someone, who I feel betrayed him by his lack of support in the election, in that powerful position. But, of course, that’s his business. When a person doesn’t vote for one person in the election, then that person is automatically voting for the opposing candidate.
This strikes me as a person afraid that the person he is afraid to vote for because he or she thinks the other candidate is going to win, is playing both candidates hoping to gain favor from whomever wins. This is not being loyal to anyone, but just seeking favor for him or herself. Who would want this person on their side when that person is so self-seeking? If Ryan couldn’t support Trump, that made it automatically a support for Hillary, and that was not the best person to put in office. This is only common sense. But, Trump will make the right decision, he does not have to buy favors, and for that I thank God.
What I think is phony and despicable is the way that Ryan was looking at President elect Trump while they were both on the podium. The smile he had on his face was definitely a smile of “I like you now that you are the President elect” but give me one opening and I will backstab you immediately!
