It may be one of the most unpatriotic moves from a major company ever — and it has Americans everywhere up in arms.
A former Marine says he was fired from his contract job with Time Warner Cable in Charlotte, NC after he lowered the American flag to half-staff on Memorial Day.
The Charlotte Observer reports Allen Thornwell was thinking about his best friend, a former Marine who he says killed himself two years ago after he returned stateside.
The 29-year-old Thornwell was fired last Tuesday.
According to The Associated Press, the placement service that arranged the job for Thornwell said Time Warner told them they were disturbed by what was termed his “passion for the flag and (his) political affiliation.”
Thornwell said he remains in shock over his firing. “I don’t know what kind of moral compass you need to fire a veteran on Memorial Day for lowering the flag,” he told the Charlotte Observer.
“It’s disgraceful,” Murph Archibald, a Vietnam vet and Thornwell’s attorney, told the Charlotte Observer. “He didn’t do anything wrong. He’s a veteran working on Memorial Day who corrected what he thought was a disrespectful flying of the American flag… I would have taken it down myself.”
A Time Warner spokesman confirmed Friday that the former Marine “was no longer under contract” with the company but declined further comment.

I hope that every Horn reader who subscribes to Time Warner Cable is very angrily contacting them and threatening to discontinue service. This is the only thing that will get their attention. I notice that there have been many instances of suppression of patriotism in the news this years. They are mostly from southern or southwest states. Proof that this political correctness fascism is everywhere.

Where are the American Flags that should be flying everyday and especially on Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, etc. I see very few of them out there. Maybe if they were put back into the draft and serviced our country then maybe they will fly the flag. Where are the true Americans.

That hit me this year on Memorial Day and my husband was hanging our flag………I did not see one other flag on our block and very few scattered around town of almost 20,000 people. That is a shame that people can’t put out a flag once in a while for a holiday………..great if they want to fly it every day. Another thing I have been noticing is the lack of the proper display of the American flag, day or night flying of the flag. People seem to think they can put out the flag to fly any time they please and then forget it is out there. I have a hard time dealing with the attitudes of the American people and their abuse of our flag. So many have absolutely no knowledge and history of our flag. It is really very interesting story. Manorial Day is set aside to honor the Fallen Military Members that have died for our freedom. I saw this news elsewhere and it said that the veteran was fired because (and I paraphrase) he put the flag on the company property at half mast for Memorial Day and that the company did not like his political affiliation (or something very similar).

The fellow busted the flag code by lowering a flag that was being flown properly, a flag that did not belong to him. In that case he should have been advised by the supervisor and told to put it back to full staff. Either I see no reason to fire him unless he was told to put it back and disobeyed the order. I just talked to my mother in L.A. a few days ago. They hate TWC, but had it as there was no other that they liked. She just told me that Spectrum bought them out and the service went from bad, to worse. She is so fed up with the new company, she is considering trying someone else if she can find a deal, as she lives on a fixed income like so many that are getting ripped off just to watch tv and talk to relatives easily by using email.
TWC/Spectrum should be shut down for doing this. Cancel your service with them.

Went to Red Lobster on Memorial day and saw that their flag was not lowered.
We told the manager and her response was that the head office had told them to raise the flag at noon.
Why……? Does Red Lobster only honor half of the DEAD?
They have now lost 4 customers……that is 4 x12 visits a year or 48*$30.00 or about $1600 a year not much to them but we were not the only ones at the store that were upset by the flag decision. And we are telling every one we know and all the Vets agree that it was very disrespectful and will not spend their money with Red Lobster either.

Time Warner’s response was excessive and tone deaf. Even if the person in question acted beyond their authority the patriotic motivation cannot be dismissed as a mitigating factor in any discipline or corrective action to be handed down.
The retired veteran acted unilaterally without regard for the proper chain of command. You get court-martialed for that in the military. You get fired for that in the private sector.
What Time Warner did was wrong. It was bad enough that they farmed out over 10,000 jobs that American’s should have had, now they’d stooped to this level. I’m going to call my Congressman & Senator, right after I call Time Warner in Newport and Charlotte and give them a piece of my mind. There’s to many comments to read, but being from a military family and losing a loved one that was defending our country n all our rights, any person or company refusing to honor our service members living or dead is a Traitor to our country.

Times Warner is a company under stress.
The wiring is done by subcontractors who are less costly than actual employees of Times Warner. For two months, Times Warner did not communicate well with the subcontractors to fix the coaxial cable in our attic, tested by a Times Warner technician and found to be faulty sporadically. During those two months subcontractors for Times Warner actually came by to ask about our account and defective wiring, but when they finally got a work order to come to our attic to fix the faulty cable the subcontractors never came (or Times Warner messed up again). Times Warner then said they had sent someone to our home and left a note on the door. No such note was ever seen by us.
It’s not that Times Warner is dishonest. It’s just that they are such a huge company, the different departments cannot coordinate well. Of course, they’ll favor the bigger accounts that pay for bundled Cable TV, Cable digital phone, and Internet, etc. because that’s where the profit is.
I have reported the Times Warner office in my area to the State’s Attorney General. It got to be that bad – a huge waste of time dealing over the phone with a uncoordinated company. Go with AT&T.
Time warner, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNBC, FOX all the same, controlled by the government. We need a leader who will put this country first again, and call out the press for their false commentaries.
I didn’t realize Time Warner hated our flag and our vets, I would never do business with them.
You want Customer Support with a thick Indian/British accent? Go with Times Warner. If the customer rep. you happen to get on the phone doesn’t know how to solve your problem, they will repeat their lines trying to get you to buy more from Times Warner. Or you will get incorrect information because They do have some very intelligent and technically prepared customer reps. (answering from India), but you will have to jump from one department to the other and never get a solution. It’s all a waste of time to go through Times Warner Customer Support (they are good, but then it turns out it is all mere talk when there’s a faulty-wiring problem).

I’m a Vietnam Veteran and Retired NCO from the US Army and I believe TWC needs to be shut down and there lights turned off by there power company for good until they reinstate this veteran. I consider TWC has committed Treason on the US Soil and I would stick that CEO of TWC on the Front Lines in Iraq and have him see what combat is like. That CEO is a common thug in my eyes and that contractor who does business with TWC needs to disengage from that cable company.

Instead of firing a veteran, the company should have learned and instructed it’s personnel on this. Since they didn’t do that, I’m having serious thoughts about them.
But the story seems incomplete.
It is incomplete. TWC had followed the flag protocol properly. They did not fail to observe Memorial Day Flag Display guidelines. They had flown the flag at half staff all morning and raised it to full staff at midday for the rest of the day. Exactly as they are supposed to.
The vet decided in mid afternoon that the flag should be lowered to half staff again…contrary to established protocol…and then took it upon himself to lower the flag.
And then he went off on a tantrum when he was confronted about it. Ranting. Profanity. The whole nine yards.

I have read many of the comments made here and I respectfully wish to make another statement concerning our Nations Flag. Our Flag is not a symbol of government or necessarily the Amber Fields Of Grain. It is rather a symbol indicating the unity of We The People.

Mr. Thornwell was working a 2pm-7pm shift, he lowered the flag at 2:30. It could have been at half staff before noon, he wasn’t there.
