Memorial Day commemorates the servicemembers “who died while in the military service.” The purpose of the holiday is in the name, and it’s posted on the Veterans Affairs website.
Still, two far-left members of Congress completely missed the point — and had to delete their misguided tweets.
Reps. Cori Bush and Ilhan Omar, far-left allies of Rep. Alexandira Ocasio-Cortez, confused Memorial Day with Veterans’ Day, a holiday honoring both the living and dead.
Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., was elected in 2018, as part of Ocasio-Cortez’ anti-Trump “squad.”
Cori Bush, D-Mo., followed two years later, and — like Ocasio-Cortez — she maintained her membership in the Democratic Socialists of America.
Omar tweeted Monday, “On #MemorialDay, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country. We owe them more than our gratitude — they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.”
Bush made the same mistake.
“This #MemorialDay & every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis. We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational & economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence,” Bush said in a now-deleted tweet.
Bush and Omar clearly don’t know what Memorial Day is for, and when called out by critics they rushed to delete the tweets.
One person accused both representatives of “pandering for their programs and using the wrong day to do it.”
Omar’s office later posted another, more appropriate tweet to replace the deleted one. “On Memorial Day, let’s say thank you to the brave men and women who selflessly sacrificed their lives in service to our country.”
Bush has come under fire for her out-of-touch statements on past holidays. “When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free,” Bush tweeted on Jul. 4, 2021.
Now, Bush and Omar are seeing their out-of-touchness reflected in the polls. This year, Bush has been polling behind a primary challenger, and Omar barely won her 2022 primary by only 2.1 points, despite her two-term incumbency.
Take a look —
