A high-powered Democrat politician who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a minority children’s charity says she shouldn’t go to jail… because punishing her would be “racist.”
Rep. Corinne Brown was one of an Obama pal and one of his most loyal voters, Nancy Pelosi’s close ally, and a superdelegate for Hillary Clinton at last year’s Democratic National Convention. She was a far-left member of Congress from Florida from 1993 until this year.
She was also a total crook, setting up a phony charity that she told donors would help poor, mostly black and Hispanic children struggling in bad schools.
The One Door for Education Foundation collected $800,000 — but only gave out two scholarships worth a total of $1,200.
It never even registered as a nonprofit 501(c)(3).
Instead, Brown and two of her associates used it as their personal piggy bank and political slush fund.
Prosecutors found that $330,000 of the loot went to events to promote Brown with her donors and voters, or to luxury seats at concerts in D.C.
The congresswoman pocketed $70,000 outright. Her two associates, including her chief-of-staff in Congress, got away with hundreds of thousands more.
Her toadies plead guilty, but Brown decided to play the race card instead.
Why would anyone want to send Brown to jail for ripping off poor kids?
“I guess [because] I’m a black woman with a mouth,” she told a local TV station.
This, folks, is how delusional the Democratic Party has become.
“During my entire political career, I have fought racism, injustice and advocated for individuals who normally get left behind,” she wrote in July in a (surprise) fundraising letter. “It should come as no surprise that some took offense to my efforts to stand up for you.”
She even that the radical Islamic terror attack at a gay bar in Orlando that left dozens of people dead happened because she was being prosecuted!
The Democrat establishment embraced Brown for almost 25 years despite a checkered history of corruption and influence-peddling. The Florida Times-Union has a full run-down of her crimes and controversies… starting in 1982.
All along, she’s insisted that she is the real victim of a “bogus” case brought by racists in the Obama administration. “They have just taken my name and destroyed it,” she said. “My name is all I have.”
Well, that and the $800,000.
A jury convicted her of 18 of 22 corruption charges in February. The feds are asking that she be sent to jail for at least 7, and up to 9-and-a-half years.
Brown thinks probation and community service would be plenty. A judge will decide her sentence on December 4.
Last week the congresswoman begged the courtroom to “take into consideration all that I’ve done in my life, and I humbly ask for mercy and compassion.”
We hope the judge takes everything she’s done into consideration… and throws the book at her.
