The New York Police Department is now allowing Sikh (seek) officers to wear turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long for religious reasons.
Police Commissioner James O’Neill announced the new rules that affect all religious members on Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new police recruits. Officers must first get approval and the turbans must be navy blue and have the NYPD insignia attached.
Male observant Sikhs often cover their heads with turbans — which are considered sacred — and refrain from shaving their beards.
Before, Sikh officers had to fit their turbans under their department issued cap. Beards were forbidden because they interfered with wearing gas masks.
O’Neil says there are about 160 Sikhs serving in the police department.

Sikhs are not Muslims.
They are the mortal enemies of Muslims in India and many surrounding countries. Known for their good deeds and ferocious fighting skills. They were allowed their turbans when in the British army. Sikhs who have been serving have followed the uniform code because of their intense desire to be of service in a positive way. They simply asked for permission and it was granted. They did not demand and would have continued to serve even if the request had been denied. People need to study the difference between Sikhs and Muslims. Completely different ways of belief and life!

All of you nasty intolerant people should get your facts straight before you badmouth an entire religious group en mass. Sikhs ARE NOT Muslims. I’m sure there are exceptions, but Sikhs are generally known to be peace-loving, law-abiding, tolerant people. Perhaps you could learn something from them.

Hey the police dept has a uniform, and it means everybody dresses alike, the military has a uniform code.

Once again the lowest denomination. 0.463% of the uniform police in NYC, will dictate USA standards.
With 160 or 0.463% of 34,500 changing a standard sooner than later the NYC PD will look like a Halloween costume party.
