A New Hampshire town’s fight for Christmas lights

A New Hampshire town that said it wouldn’t be decorated with holiday lights this season because of code issues with a utility now has a glimmer of hope.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that Exeter town officials have been talking to Unitil and are looking to get an electrician to install a needed meter and utility pole panel so they can set up their lighted garlands.

Unitil installed some new poles this summer that changed the overall electric layout of downtown. Scott Wade of Unitil had told officials that the garlands get close to energized electrical lines; they can’t be within 40 inches.

Unitil has offered to do some line work, and the local fire and public works departments are pitching in to get holiday lights up.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

Thank you! I often wonder why it is so difficult for some people to say it as is? We seem to take PC to the excess. And it is Christmas!!!

That is because Christmas is associated with Christ and Christ is associated with God and this nation kicked God out a long time ago. Haven’t you heard, the government is now mommy, daddy and ruler supreme.

Merry Christmas! And the best thing would be to install solar panels like they do with street lights to take the energy (with little cost) from above – who could find fault with that?

Holiday! Holiday! Holiday! My America too, my holiday season too. You might want to take it from me, I might not want to let you. Nothing about PC, everything about being charitible and, yes, Christian, this time of year. Jesus never turned anyone away, why would you?

Isn’t that nice. But you can’t call them holiday lights. It is politically incorrect.

Gerald – Who said I wanted to be PC? Don’t be so paranoid that you see people who are different from you as enemies. Have you thought about getting some treatment for your mental difficulties? How old are you? Could this be a beginning sign of Alzheimers? It is your Christmas, even tho many of you are heretics, my holidays, her Kwaanza (sp) and his Chanukah. All at the same time of year. Not to mention my birthday is the 19th. If I want to see them as birthday lights, I will. Does that make them any less to you? If so, see comments above. I am really sorry for you and your problems. I am appalled by the person who named Trump as savior, read your bible again. I doubt if the light of the world is going to manifest itself in a corrupt person who, next to himself, has money as his god.

Why is Kwaanza, Chanukah OK but we can’t say Merry Christmas? If anyone is getting Alzheimers it appears its you. To call people heretics shows you obviously aren’t a Christian and that’s OK, but we are Christians so mind your own nasty business. If you like being so PC, that’s OK too, because most people who CLAIM to be PC are always what you accuse others of being. I feel sorry for you because you obviously are not a happy person, but have a Merry Christmas anyway.

It’s kind of nice living in Texas, where clerks at the stores tell you to have a “Blessed day”. And PC has made Americans gun-shy to stand up for what they think and believe, even though the PC police can say what they believe. Christians, let’s use Christmas again. We do put up Christmas trees, and give Christmas presents. Jews use Hanukkah. They don’t light holiday candles. And even Muslims use Ramadan. And they make no bones about it. Let’s be honest and call it what it is….Christmas. Don’t let the PC Grinch steal it.

Did I try to take Christmas away from you? Yes, if you want to say Merry Christmas, be my guest (expression, don’t get excited), you don’t need my permission. As to the Christian above who got insulted when I called out saying trump is the messiah, I say again: read your bible. How could you do that? Want to think of him as a rescuer, does not have the disrespectful religious connotations, fine. When my messiah comes, he will not be wrapped up in a 70 year old miserable sinner, who fakely pretended to be born again.
We are all going to suffer in the next four years: I NEED my SS and my Medicare, I don’t want to trade it for having my son lose his. I Paid into it for years and years, it is not an entitlement, it is my investment in the government and it was supposed to grow. When Wall St was not allowed to fail because they were too big, I was too small to be saved and lost almost all of years of saving for which I scrimped. I say again, leave my SS and Medicare alone, say NO to Ryan, or we seniors are going to have our own revolution and really clean the swamp!

It’s Christ’s Birthday observance. It’s ChristMASS a time to gather and worship the Christ Child! The Christmas lights are symbols of the birth of the Light of the World, the very Son of God. Pagans use to worship the rebirth of the Sun, Christians worship the Son of Righteous! It’s a time to sing about peace on earth “peace between God and sinful humankind…peace between the members of humankind, people of goodwill.” It’s time again to celebrate God’s gifts of peace, love, joy, and hope!
