Navy’s futuristic destroyer arrives in San Diego

The Navy’s most technologically advanced destroyer is arriving at its homeport after dealing with some glitches along the way.

The stealthy USS Zumwalt arrives Thursday in San Diego, where it’ll begin installation of combat systems and further testing and evaluation.

The ship was commissioned in October in Baltimore and encountered some hiccups on its way to California. That included losing propulsion in the Panama Canal, necessitating a tow and repairs.

The 610-foot destroyer was built by Maine’s Bath Iron Works. The ship features new technology including an electric power plant that drives the ship, an inward-sloping tumblehome hull and an angular shape to minimize the radar signature.

That technology comes at a price. The Zumwalt’s cost is more than $4.4 billion. Two more ships in the class are being built.

The Associated Press contributed to this article.

    Cool!

Hopefully Trump has the testicular fortitude to use this weapon against ALL of the enemies of the USA!

I believe The President Trump will be tried and challenged by foes at home and abroad. He has dealt with opposition all of his life and he is up to the task. Once people know his fortitude and energy they will have second thoughts about testing America’s power and greatness again. We are a nation under God who will guide us and preserve us one His enemies have left the White House for good.

I believe he will, as a businessman he has had to be ruthless when dealing with his enemies in the business world. Now, as POTUS I believe he will be pretty much the same. If you wanna mess with the US prepare to get your ass handed to ya! To that end I don’t think it will take more than one or two shows of strength and some of our enemies will back down. Also, he won’t be as easily swayed and will NOT bow to anyone! We are the USA we bow to no one!

The bullets for this ship cost 800k each, and the Pentagon can’t afford them. This ship is a fiasco.

For that amount of money, couldn’t we get a submersible Aircraft Carrier? Just one well aimed torpedo could sink that destroyer.

$4.400,000,000.00 That’s a lot of money! I don’t care who says what, technology doesn’t cost that much. This is an example of the military/industrial complex ripping off the American taxpayer. Castro’s jeep broke down on the way to his funeral And all of us conservatives had a good laugh. This is a $4.4 BILLIOn U.S. warship that broke down. I wonder who’s laughing now.

I expect Trump to refuse the other two Destroyers as the price is too high and he can get a better price. He will renegotiate until they agree to name one of the Destroyers Trump on the Sea.

I hope to see the audit on cost over runs by contractors for these defense projects, I am really wondering just how much cronynism is involved and good old porker bills…….I am looking for us to do better without scamming the public….

Well said. What ever happened to American ingenuity, pride in a job well done and pride in American made products that would last decades?
