First Lady Melania Trump fired back at a CNN reporter’s “gotcha” question Wednesday. The reporter accused Melania of using a White House event celebrating freed Israeli hostages to promote her new documentary, “Melania.”
CNN reporter Betsy Klein asked the first lady why she felt it was “appropriate” to use an official White House event to promote her documentary during a meeting with freed hostages Keith and Aviva Siegel in the Blue Room.
“Why do you feel it is appropriate to use an official White House event to promote your documentary?” Klein asked.
“This is not a promotion. We are here celebrating the release of the hostages of Aviva and Keith,” Melania Trump shot back. “They were in Washington, D.C., and they called me. They said they would like to come over to thank me and to give hugs. And that’s why we are here. It has nothing to do with promotion.”
The event came after Melania Trump welcomed the Siegels to the White House to celebrate their release from Hamas captivity.
During her remarks, the first lady talked about her documentary while recounting her meeting with Aviva Siegel.
“It was emotional meeting, and it is captured on camera and available to see in my film, ‘Melania,'” Trump said.

Keith Siegel was captured by radical Islamic terrorists on October 7, 2023, and held for 484 days before being freed in February 2025. Aviva Siegel was released after 51 days in captivity.
During the White House meeting, Keith Siegel thanked Trump for the role he said she played in bringing him home. He discussed his efforts to work in humanitarian aid in Kenya as part of his recovery process before congratulating the first lady on her new movie.
“Looking forward to seeing it, and so grateful for you deciding to have Aviva be a part of your movie,” Keith Siegel said.
Aviva Siegel thanked Trump “for putting me in your special ‘Melania’ film.”
On Thursday morning, the Siegels appeared on “Fox & Friends” and expressed their gratitude to Melania Trump, crediting her for their freedom.
“Well, you know, having a hostage in Gaza, I was just thinking about everything that I could maybe do to put pressure on anybody that will listen to me and [Melania] opened her heart and she listened to me,” Aviva Siegel said. “And from that minute, I knew that she would go to her husband, President Trump ,and talk about Keith and I, and that’s exactly what happened. And for me it was like a start of believing that it’s going to happen she gave me lots of faith and first of all, she’s just lovely and she opened her heart and she really made me feel welcomed and listened to everything that I said. And I want to thank her, and Keith wants to thank her.”
