House Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has been calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump since the day he was inaugurated.
Now that she’s getting her wish, Waters is furious that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is following the example set by Democrats when it comes to the president’s upcoming trial.
McConnell is setting the rules of the Trump impeachment trial to favor Republicans – a move straight from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s 1998 impeachment playbook. It also mirrors what Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-Calif., did during the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry.
During the trial, it’s almost certain that every Republican senator – and some Democrats — will back Trump and he’ll remain in office until the end of his term
And it has Waters very, very upset.
“We have heard a lot of discussion about abuse of power… this country hasn’t seen anything yet,” Waters said, visibly angry. “They’re about to see McConnell and the Republicans runover the Constitution and disregard everyone.”
“He’s told you in advance that he’s not going to be fair,” she complained. “So we are about to see something worse… than this country has ever seen.”
Without a hint of irony after Nadler’s controversial impeachment inquiry rules, Waters claimed – falsely — that in the past, the Senate and the House would agree on bipartisan rules.
“McConnell is not thinking about what Democrats want to do, or how to involve Democrats in setting up the rules for what is going to take place in the so-called ‘jury trial,’” Waters huffed.
“They’re going to run roughshod over us, and the presidency will never be the same,” she said.
Waters brought up the debunked Trump-Russia collusion conspiracy theory as evidence. Trump had met with the Russian foreign minister earlier this month to warn them not to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.
“They’re in our face, and in the face of the American people. It’s terrible,” Waters said. “It is going to be awful!”
“Watch what happens in the Senate,” Waters warned MSNBC host Joy Reid.
“You’re going to see what happens. You’re going to see what happens when your democracy is undermined,” she said, continuing to push her debunked Russia conspiracy theory. ”You’re going to see what happens when you have people in power who disregard the Constitution, who don’t care about the democracy, who are opening the door to Putin and Russia.”
“You’re going to see things are going to change if this president remains in office,” she said.
“You will see him align himself with Putin and Russia,” she said. “He already said, you know, that he’s not going to condemn him, he’s not going to do anything to talk about the fact that we’ve been undermined already by Putin and Russia. They’re going to do it again!”
“This president doesn’t care at all,” she said.
“Republicans don’t care what we think,” she concluded. “They’re telling us they’re going to do what they want to do. They’re not going to have rules that are going to be fair — and they’re just going to run through so-called impeachment jury inquiry. They’re not going to do anything.”
