President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is getting a fifth job under him.

Rubio has been tasked to chair the United States’ bid to host the World Expo 2035 in Miami, adding yet another responsibility to the former Florida senator’s already long list of duties within the administration.

“I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the World,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America.”

The appointment marks Rubio’s fifth major role in the Trump administration.

Rubio already serves as Secretary of State, acting National Security Advisor, acting Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and acting Archivist of the United States.

Trump’s announcement came as he revealed the United States’ intention to bid for the World Expo 2035. Florida expressing strong interest in hosting the event in Miami.

“The event is an incredible stage to showcase our nation’s Golden Age and American exceptionalism before the world,” Rubio wrote in response to the announcement. “There is nothing quite like Miami hospitality and it would be a privilege to bring the World Expo back to the U.S. for the first time since 1962.”

Trump touted the economic benefits of hosting the Expo, and said it would create thousands of jobs and add billions of dollars in growth to the economy.

“In my First Term as President, I fought hard to bring the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 LA Summer Olympics to the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote. “I now have the Honor of hosting as the 47th President, plus America250, G20 Doral, and the G7. I look forward to winning and participating in the Miami Expo 2035!”

Rubio’s expanding job list has drawn attention from both supporters and critics. On February 3, 2025, the State Department announced Rubio had been appointed the acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Trump followed on February 16, naming Rubio as the acting National archivist chief of the United States in a Truth Social post.

On May 1, Trump announced Rubio would also serve as national security advisor “in the interim” while continuing to lead the State Department.

Rubio is the first person since Henry Kissinger to simultaneously serve as both Secretary of State and National Security Advisor. Kissinger held both roles under President Nixon from September 1973 to November 1975. Multiple people have held both roles during their career, but at different times, including Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice.

Beyond his formal titles, Rubio has also emerged as Trump’s point person on Venezuela policy, a role that became prominent following the recent capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Trump credited Rubio with driving the strategy behind the operation and has relied on him to manage U.S. policy toward the South American nation.

When asked by reporters who would be running Venezuela after Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces, Trump pointed to Rubio, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Rubio’s rise within the Trump administration represents a dramatic turnaround from the 2016 presidential campaign, when Trump called his Republican primary opponent “Little Marco” while Rubio described Trump as a “con man.”

The two eventually formed a working relationship. Rubio endorsed Trump ahead of the 2016 general election. In Trump’s first term, Rubio came to be seen as the president’s “shadow secretary” on Latin America.

Trump allies say the president’s willingness to assign multiple roles to Rubio reflects his trust and confidence in the secretary.

“When Trump likes you and trusts you, he loads you up. Marco is loaded up,” a White House official told Axios. “The president pulls him in for everything.”

Rubio has maintained a lighthearted approach to his multiple jobs.

“I joked with @POTUS that I had four jobs. He told me to give one to my friend,” Rubio wrote on X in August.
