CNN host Abby Phillip created a new nickname for President Donald Trump — and his MAGA supporters quickly embraced it with love.
Phillip compared the president to the superhero Batman during a Monday when talking about his Washington D.C. police takeover.
Trump recently declared that he is “crimefighter in chief” and Phillips tried to mock the president, comparing the situation to Batman in the DC Comics.
“Donald Trump makes himself Batman and the nation’s capital is Gotham City,” Phillip said. “The President of the United States has declared himself crime-fighter-in-chief, and he’s taking over Washington’s police force.”
Trump declared a “public safety emergency” in Washington D.C. this week and deployed National Guard troops to the city. He called D.C. one of the most dangerous places in the world, and has vowed to restore order.
Phillip told her panel that Trump’s move is “unsettling and unprecedented” according to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. She argued Trump was “painting [the situation] as an emergency” without much proof.
The CNN anchor said crime in D.C. is “at a 30-year low.” Metropolitan Police Department data shows violent crime is down 26% this year, though there have been 100 homicides so far this year.
However, D.C.’s murder rate ranks seventh highest in the nation among cities with 250,000 or more residents. The city saw a 30% increase in murders in 2020, part of a nationwide trend. Shoplifting and attacks on government employees peaked in 2023 before starting their dip.
Conservative supporters immediately seized on Phillip’s Batman nickname on social media.

Supporters also circulated a 2015 video clip of Trump interacting with a young boy during a helicopter ride. When the child asked “Are you Batman?” Trump responded, “I am Batman.”

Trump signed an order Monday deploying the National Guard, who were ordered to report to their stations Tuesday morning. The president is taking control of D.C.’s police force as part of his public safety emergency declaration.
Phillip’s panel discussion focused on crime statistics in Washington, with Trump supporters arguing that official numbers don’t reflect residents’ experiences with crime. Trump has highlighted the 2023 crime spike and polls showing the concerns of D.C. residents as justification for his moves.
.@PressSec reads a poll from the @washingtonpost that shows that 65% of D.C. residents think crime "is an extremely serious or a very serious problem":
