Just days after Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly “anointed” as the successor to President Joe Biden by the Democratic Party establishment, a scandal has erupted inside the party.
Black Lives Matter (BLM) Foundation has publicly challenged the Democratic Party’s swift nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris following Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
The left-wing organization is calling for a virtual snap primary, and accused the party “hypocrites” of subverting democratic principles in its rush to install Harris as the presumptive 2024 Democratic presidential nominee — the first major blow to Harris’ brand new presidential campaign.
“We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Any attempt to evade or override the will of voters in our primary system—no matter how historic the candidate—must be condemned,” BLM’s Tuesday statement forcefully declared.
The group said that bypassing a public voting process will undermine Harris’s legitimacy at the polls — and the Democratic Party’s credibility on democracy.
“Installing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and an unknown vice president without any public voting process would make the modern Democratic Party a party of hypocrites,” BLM’s later stated, and demanded a process that “upholds democratic principles and public participation.”
The controversy erupted after Harris quickly secured over 260 endorsements from elected Democrats and raised over $100 million in fundraising since Biden’s Sunday announcement.
This rapid consolidation of Democratic establishment support has raised eyebrows and prompted accusations of an undemocratic “coronation.”
BLM’s criticism extends beyond the nomination process — the far-left group questioned Harris’ stance on key issues and the identity of her potential running mate.
“We have no idea where Kamala Harris stands on the issues, now that she has assumed Joe Biden’s place, and we have no idea of the record of her potential vice president because we don’t even know who it is yet,” the organization pointed out.
The situation has also drawn reactions from across the political spectrum.
Some Republican lawmakers initially labeled Harris a “DEI hire.” At least one major Democratic megadonor has also condemned the so-called “coronation” of Harris and is withholding his donations.
Other House GOP leaders directed attacks to Harris’ ties to Biden’s policy issues.
“This should not be about personalities. It should be about policy. And we have a record to compare,” Speaker Mike Johnson, R., L.A., said. He tied Harris to Biden’s poor record in the White House.
“This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with the competence of the person running for president, the relative strength of the two candidates and what ideas they have on how to solve America’s problems,” Johnson said. “And I think in that comparison, we’ll win in a landslide.”
