At Fox News, the chief congressional correspondent Chad Pergram has reportedly received cryptic hints that Vice President Kamala Harris’ short tenure could be over soon.
Rising tensions between the Harris camp and the Oval Office have made headlines in recent weeks.
This latest report hints that their infighting may have reached the point of no return – and President Joe Biden could try and replace Harris while Democrats maintain control of the House of Representatives.
Pergram received a tip from a source that he should “start to familiarize yourself with the confirmation process not just in the Senate, but in the House, for a vice president.”
Under the 25th Amendment, should Harris resign, the president would fill the vacant office of vice president by nominating a candidate who would need to be approved by both the House and Senate.
“I was very surprised to get that very cryptic email just a few weeks ago,” Pergram told Bret Baier’s on Fox News Radio during an interview Tuesday.
It would not be the first time in history that a vice president was changed. Seven former vice presidents have died in office and the position was left vacant until the next election.
In late 1832, former Vice President John C. Calhoun resigned with three months left in office to fill a vacant Senate seat. He was also not replaced. The 25th Amendment was not passed until 1967.
The only time in U.S. history a vice president has been officially replaced was when Gerald Ford took office after former Vice President Spiro Agnew when Agnew resigned in 1973.
Ford would later assume the presidency from former President Richard Nixon following Nixon’s resignation the next year.
The White House has denied the reports of conflict and tension between Harris and Biden.
For anyone who needs to hear it. @VP is not only a vital partner to @POTUS but a bold leader who has taken on key, important challenges facing the country—from voting rights to addressing root causes of migration to expanding broadband.
