Sen. John Fetterman, D-Penn., revealed on Monday that he’d suffered a traffic collision while driving with his wife, philanthropist Gisele Barreto Fetterman.
However, Fetterman left certain details blank. For example, he didn’t reveal the identity of another driver involved in the crash.
Now, the police report is revealing some harrowing details.
The report said that Fetterman had been driving very, very quickly on I-70 in Maryland and that he hit another car from behind.
A witness told the police that, shortly before 8 a.m. Fetterman had been driving “at a high rate of speed, well over the posted speed limit” of 70 mph.
Soon after, Fetterman rear-ended another vehicle. Fetterman was not tested for alcohol or drug use, and the report does not say he was distracted.
Police identified the other driver as a 62-year-old woman, and the police report described Fetterman as responsible for the crash. Police added that both cars were towed and that all three people went to the hospital for minor injuries.
Earlier this year, Fetterman pleaded guilty to a citation for driving 34 mph over the speed limit, according to court records in Pennsylvania.
Following the hospital stay, Fetterman went back to his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania. He posted a video addressing the collision, thanking the public for its well-wishes, and saying that they hadn’t planned a hospital visit on their anniversary.
Fetterman, 54, suffered a stroke while campaigning for his Senate seat. Because of this, he still has some difficulty speaking smoothly and quickly understanding spoken conversation. He often uses devices in congressional hearings and regular conversations to transcribe spoken words in real-time.
