Sen. John Fetterman, D-Penn., may have just begun his second year in the Senate, but he’s seen enough health woes for an entire career.
On Sunday morning, he was dealt another.
Fetterman and his wife, philanthropist Gisele Barreto Fetterman, were hospitalized after a traffic collision with another driver, according to a statement from his Senate office.
At the time, Fetterman was driving the car on Interstate 70 in Maryland, according to spokesperson Carrie Adams. He was treated at a local hospital for a bruised shoulder and released later that afternoon.
Both the senator and his wife were discharged within hours of the incident. The senator has since returned to his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania, and is expected to be back in the Senate for votes this week.
Fetterman, 54, suffered a stroke in May 2022 while campaigning for his Senate seat.
As a result of the stroke, he still experiences some difficulty speaking fluidly and quickly processing spoken conversation. To assist him, Fetterman often uses devices in congressional hearings and routine conversations that transcribe spoken words in real-time.
Shortly after his swearing-in, Fetterman checked himself into the hospital for post-stroke depression. He missed several months of his first year in the Senate.
Fetterman remains confident in his abilities, despite the stroke and the recent collision. According to his office, he expects to attend the Senate votes later this week.
“Hi, everybody! You’ve heard that we were involved in a car accident, and that’s absolutely true,” Fetterman said alongside Barreto Fetterman in a video released Monday. “Not great for your wedding anniversary, but we’re both great.”
Barreto Fetterman chimed in briefly. “It was the worst anniversary ever,” she said.
In the video, Fetterman was icing his bruise with frozen peas from Harris Teeter, a chain grocer.
“I’m using frozen peas from the Teeter and, of course, Tylenol, but we’re great,” he concluded. “Thank you for anyone with the well wishes.”
The condition of the other driver involved in the accident is currently unknown.

Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary but we’re doing well and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family. pic.twitter.com/OKFmbUXtNF
