Joe Biden says he’ll withdraw from 2024 race (…if?)

President Joe Biden offered the first significant hint that he may soon be withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, a stark contrast to his White House’s previous defiant stance.

This revelation came during a BET interview taped on Tuesday, where the 81-year-old president stated he would drop out — as soon as his doctor advised him to do so.

Biden’s comments ignited a firestorm of speculation about the possibility of a “dignified” exit strategy. The timing is particularly noteworthy, coming on the heels of Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., publicly calling for Biden to leave the race and reports of Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., privately urging the president to step aside during a weekend visit in Delaware.

The president’s health has been a subject of intense scrutiny, with some experts recently suggesting he may be suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

This speculation is fueled by observations of Biden’s physical appearance, including stiff arms and limited hand movements, which are characteristic of the condition. Reports of a Parkinson’s expert visiting the White House multiple times have added weight to these concerns.

Should Biden decide to withdraw, the Democratic Party would face unprecedented challenges.

The logistics of shifting support to another candidate in mid-July would be daunting, as such a late-stage change has never occurred in modern American politics. Furthermore, Biden’s exit would likely ignite talk of his resignation from the presidency, as it would be difficult to justify being fit for the office but not for a re-election campaign.

The potential withdrawal also raises questions about Vice President Kamala Harris’s role and the party’s succession plan. Harris, as the sitting VP, would have a strong claim to the nomination — but her own unpopularity with voters could complicate matters.

Despite these hints, many critics remain skeptical that Biden will actually withdraw. The influence of First Lady Jill Biden, Hunter Biden, and the president’s inner circle of advisors — who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo –cannot be underestimated.

Additionally, the massive restructuring required for the Democratic Party’s campaign operation at this late stage presents real hurdles.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether July is the beginning of a major shift in the 2024 presidential race — or if Biden, down perilously in polls, clings to the nomination.
