In November, Fox News channel’s early call of Arizona in favor of Joe Biden over President Donald Trump angered supporters of the president.
Many vowed to switch to NewsmaxTV, a top conservative rival of Fox News and home to rising star Greg Kelly. Trump himself has repeatedly endorsed the network as a Fox alternative for his supporters.
But it was Newsmax’s turn to stun viewers late Tuesday when they became the first major news network to call both runoff Senate races in Georgia for the Democrats.
No other major networks have officially called both races as of Wednesday morning.
Late Tuesday, Newsmax called the race between Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, the incumbent, in favor of Warnock. Most other major networks would do the same shortly after.
But it was the network’s early Wednesday call for Democrat Jon Ossoff over Republican Sen. David Perdue, the incumbent, that most surprised viewers and outside observers. Newsmax had partnered with election company Decision Day HQ, which called the race in favor of Democrat Ossoff earlier than anyone else.
“Newsmax and Decision HQ called the Ossoff-Perdue race for Ossoff early Wednesday after Ossoff’s lead widened to more than 16,000 votes,” Newsmax announced, calling the news a “Georgia shocker.”
The conservative news company also made a point to claim Republican voter turnout “may have been hampered by Trump’s false insistence that the results in Georgia in November were so tainted that they needed to be thrown out.”
