In a stunning revelation, Ashleigh Merchant, an attorney for a co-defendant in the case against former President Donald Trump, has alleged that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis may have met with Vice President Kamala Harris during her controversial investigation into Trump.
According to White House visitor records presented at a Georgia Senate hearing, Willis visited the White House on February 28, 2023 – before the indictment of Trump – for a suspected meeting with Harris that would have required extensive screening.
This bombshell claim adds to serious criticisms from Republicans about potential misconduct and political motivations behind Willis’ prosecution of the presumed 2024 Republican presidential candidate.
Willis is a Democrat.
GOP legislators have also launched inquiries examining whether Willis misused funds, lied about an affair with a subordinate prosecutor on the case, and coordinated improperly with the Biden administration.
The numerous allegations of unethical behavior by the Democratic district attorney have prompted calls for accountability by critics.
The Georgia state legislature recently advanced a bill to create a powerful commission that could discipline and potentially remove intrusive prosecutors like Willis.
“This commission will be able to begin its real work, which is bringing accountability to those rogue prosecuting attorneys who abuse their office,” stated a Republican lawmaker.
Despite Democratic objections that the measure is a “partisan attempt” to undermine the Trump case, Republicans insist the new oversight panel addresses legitimate instances of prosecutorial misconduct.
They point to Willis’ murky personal relationship with an employee hired for the high-profile investigation as well as other potential serious ethical breaches.
The recent revelation that Willis may have covertly met with Harris raises even more disturbing new questions.
Critics argue such alleged behavior constitutes dangerous overreach and political bias that undermines the impartial administration of justice.
The prospect of direct White House involvement in the prosecution of a major political is further fuel to Republican concerns about a weaponized legal system rigged against conservatives.
