In an unexpected twist, former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick could be poised to shake-up the entire 2024 presidential election in a historic fashion.
Trump said he’s considering picking a Democrat as his Republican presidential running mate.
In a typical Trump-style boastfulness that raised eyebrows, the 45th president said the amount of politicians jockeying to be his 2024 running mate has grown so large that he could pick a Democrat if he desired.
But Trump reassured supporters that he’d pick a true conservative.
“I get a kick out of watching the fake news media say, Nobody wants to work with him; nobody wants to be vice president; nobody wants to be secretary of state,” Trump told Newsmax‘s “Greg Kelly Reports” in an exclusive interview Wednesday at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. “Everybody wants to be in these positions.
“There’s is not a person in politics that doesn’t want it, and that includes Democrats. If I wanted, I’d have a Democrat; I’d have a liberal; I’d have … anybody I want.”
While lofty bipartisan appeals make for popular rhetoric, the prospects of Trump actually selecting a Democratic running mate remain essentially zero, Trump assured fans.
“But we’re going to pick somebody that’s really good, really conservative; loves law and order, low taxes, low interest rates, borders,” Trump said.
But, there’s “not a person in politics that doesn’t want it, and that includes Democrats,” he boasted about his vice presidential vetting process.
Trump provided some specifics about his running mate search. He said he’s considering “the same people that everybody else is looking at” and would prioritize up-and-coming conservatives.
At the same time, Trump acknowledged his vice presidential shortlist narrowed some to rule out some former GOP primary rivals he felt “didn’t behave properly.”
He declined to name those individuals.
While the party’s 2024 nomination is locked up in everything but name, Trump’s headline grabbing thoughts about his vice presidential selection only further underscore how critical his running mate pick could be.
