Donald Trump’s running mate selected, set to be announced?

As the Republican National Convention (RNC) kicks off Monday, speculation is intensifying that Ohio Sen. JD Vance may soon be announced as former President Donald Trump’s running mate.

The rumors first started to circulate Friday, and gained traction after it was revealed that Vance is now under heightened security following the weekends assassination attempt on Trump.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed they are providing security for Vance at his Cincinnati-area home, following a request approved by Governor Mike DeWine.

While officials have been tight-lipped about the specifics of this security detail, its timing and nature have fueled widespread speculation about Vance’s potential selection as Trump’s vice presidential candidate.

Vance, a 39-year-old businessman and author, has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the VP slot on Trump’s ticket.

His rapid rise within the Republican Party and strong support from Trump’s base have positioned him as a serious candidate for the role of Trump’s running mate.

The increased security measures come in the wake of a shooting incident at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, where the former president was shot in the ear by a lone gunman. The attack has led to heightened security measures across the board, including at the RNC venue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In response to the incident, Vance blamed President Joe Biden’s rhetoric for creating an environment that led to the assassination attempt.

As the convention begins, all eyes will be on Trump’s potential VP announcement, expected as early as Monday.

The selection of Vance would signal a doubling down on Trump’s “America First” message and could be seen as a strategic move to appeal to working-class voters in key battleground states. Trump’s son, Donald Jr., reportedly favors Vance and has campaigned on his behalf.

However, it’s important to note that while Vance’s recent prominence have intensified speculation, there has been no official confirmation from the Trump campaign regarding the VP selection.

Other potential candidates, including North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, remain in contention.

The RNC, originally expected to be a boisterous affair, may now take on a more subdued tone in light of recent events.

Trump himself has indicated that his convention speech will be “a whole different speech now” due to the assassination attempt.

Whether the VP rumors prove true or not, Vance’s rising profile and strong alignment with Trump’s ideology suggest he will play a significant role in the upcoming convention — and in the future of the Republican Party.
